Arlington, TX (My Sportsbook) - Andruw Jones has found a home after a tumultuous 2008 campaign with the
Los Angeles Dodgers, as the 10-time Gold Glove center fielder signed a minor league contract with the
Texas Rangers on Sunday.
The deal is worth $500,000 with an additional $1 million in bonuses to be made if Jones reaches 620 plate appearances with the Rangers, which he has not done since 2001 with Atlanta.
The Rangers outfield will be quite crowded with David Murphy, Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz and Marlon Byrd all seeing at least 100 at-bats last season with the club.
"Andruw is another guy who brings us flexibility, experience and depth. But he has to perform," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He's certainly been a superstar for quite a few years. These past few years have been down for him, but I like the fact that he brings 10 Gold Gloves, he's a winner and he fits well into our clubhouse. He has something to prove. We've got him in camp now, we'll see where he goes from here."
Jones became a free agent after the Dodgers released him following the first year of his two-year, $36.2 million contract.
The 31-year-old spent the first 12 seasons of his career with Atlanta, but at the time of his signing with LA was coming off a 2007 season in which he had already declined. In 154 games for the Braves that year, he posted the lowest batting average (.222), on-base percentage (.311) and slugging percentage (.413) of any full season of his career -- though he still managed to compile 26 homers and 94 RBI.
However, his 2008 performance with the Dodgers fell well short of expectations, as he batted just .158 in 75 games with three homers, 14 RBI and 76 strikeouts. Jones also battled a knee injury that eventually required surgery.
In 1,836 games over 13 MLB seasons with Atlanta and LA, Jones owns a .259 average with 371 homers and 1,131 RBI. Jones is a five-time All-Star and finished second in NL MVP voting in 2005.
