Montreal, QC (My Sportsbook) - Jason Blake scored twice in the third period, as the
Toronto Maple Leafs bested Montreal, 5-2, sending the Canadiens to their seventh loss in nine games.
Luke Schenn notched his first career goal, and Nikolai Kulemin and Jeff Finger also lit the lamp for the Maple Leafs, who snapped a two-game skid. Vesa Toskala stood tall with 31 saves.
Earlier in the week, Toskala was being called out by Maple Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke, but it hasn't bothered the goaltender.
"I really don't care about what's going on outside," said Toskala. "I'm just focused on playing and focused on doing my best on the ice. Every game is important. I try to give our team a chance to win every night. That was the fifth game in a row that I got points. I'm pretty happy with that."
Tom Kostopoulos and Matt D'Agostini scored for the Canadiens, while Carey Price made 36 saves in defeat.
"It's pretty tough right now. I have to look at it in the face and come out on top. We can't go at it like this all year," said Price. "There's no excuse for letting five goals every night. I have to find a way to fix this."
Ahead by a goal moving to the third period, the Maple Leafs widened the gap thanks to goals just over six minutes apart by Blake. The first, with 3:07 expired in the stanza, came on a shot from the left circle. Then, at 9:13, he blasted the puck high past Price to finish a 2-on-1 break with Dominic Moore.
Kostopoulos made it 4-2 with 8:58 remaining on a great effort. The puck was on the ice at the left side of the crease after a scramble in front. Toskala lost vision of the disc, and Kostopoulos dove from behind the net, stretching his stick out to tap it in.
Finger scored on a high shot off an offensive draw with 1:04 remaining to seal the win.
Schenn, the fifth overall pick in last year's draft, scored with 5:23 remaining in the first. He received the puck along the right boards and put the disc on net, between the legs of Toronto forward Brad May and through past a screened Price.
Montreal, though, got a two-man advantage going into the second thanks to a hooking call from Blake and a delay of game penalty to Finger. The Canadiens capitalized on the situation 25 seconds into the period when Andrei Markov passed the puck from above the right circle to below the left circle, where D'Agostini deposited the disc by an out-of-position Toskala.
Kulemin gave the Leafs a 2-1 edge 2:37 into the second. Lee Stempniak passed the puck from the left boards to the slot, where Kulemin blasted a shot into the net.
Toskala came up with a save on a breakaway attempt by Chris Higgins with 13:17 left in the middle period.
"I thought he (Toskala) was outstanding," said Blake. "We had a lot of penalties to kill off. He was the big difference in the hockey game."
