Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - The United States women's national team will try to win their fourth straight Algarve Cup - and make the championship match for the seventh straight year - without 99-goal scorer Abby Wambach, according to the roster released Thursday.
Wambach, who broke her leg before last year's Olympics, returned to training in January but is not match fit. Angela Hucles, Natasha Kai, who led the team with 15 goals last year, Megan Rapinoe and Amy Rodriguez will continue to try and fill the void left by Wambach's absence.
Overall, thirteen players who helped the Americans win the gold medal highlight the roster, with captain Christie Rampone, Heather Mitts and Lori Chalupny all returning on defense.
"The Algarve Cup is always an important tournament and is especially good for the U.S. as we get to play the top European countries," said U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, who led the U.S. to a 33-1-2 record last season. "We will not play as many matches this year as we did in 2008, so these games are important"
The Algarve Cup is March 4-11 in Portugal, with the U.S. in Group B along with Denmark, Iceland and Norway. Group A has Germany, Sweden, China and Finland and Group C consists of Portugal, Poland, Wales and first-time participant Austria.
The United States, which has won the event six times, opens against Denmark on March 4, plays Iceland on March 6 and plays Norway on March 9. The placement matches are March 11.
The U.S. defeated Denmark in the last two Algarve Cup finals, winning 2-0 in 2007 on goals from Kristine Lilly and Carli Lloyd and 2-1 in 2008 on goals from Kai and Wambach.
