Tempe, AZ (My Sportsbook) - Freshman Klay Thompson made 8-of-10 three- pointers and finished with 28 points, as Washington State scored another road victory, upending 14th-ranked Arizona State, 65-55.
Aron Baynes added 22 points for the Cougars (12-8, 4-4 Pac-10), who are 4-1 in true road games this season, with other wins coming at Oregon, Oregon State and Idaho. Washington State made 10-of-20 three-point attempts overall in snapping its two-game losing streak.
James Harden had nearly half of Arizona State's points, scoring 26, but no other player scored in double figures for the Sun Devils (16-4, 5-3). Jeff Pendergraph added eight points and 10 rebounds for Arizona State, which had a two-game win streak broken.
Washington State was down by three at halftime, and trailed 39-32 just over four minutes into the second half after a pair of Harden free throws. But Thompson single-handedly erased the deficit, canning three straight treys to put the Cougars on top, 41-39.
The Sun Devils grabbed the lead again just before the midway point of the half, as Derek Glasser's triple gave Arizona State a 43-41 edge.
But again Washington State responded, as Thompson drilled a three, Baynes sank a jumper and Taylor Rochestie hit from beyond the arc to give the Cougars a 49-43 lead with 6:31 remaining.
The Cougars continued to lead, though with 4:41 on the clock Harden's layup got ASU within 51-49. However, Washington State responded with seven consecutive points in a critical stretch. Rochestie drained a trey, and Baynes had a dunk and two free throws to put his team ahead 58-49 with 1:01 remaining. Rochestie made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch, while Baynes added two as the Cougars held on for the win.
Arizona State led by as many as eight in the first half, but a Thompson jumper just before halftime brought Washington State within 30-27 at the break.
