Leafs outlast Avs to notch rare win in Colorado

Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Dominic Moore scored two goals and added an assist, as the Toronto Maple Leafs pulled away to top the Colorado Avalanche, 7-4, at Pepsi Center.

Jason Blake had a goal and two assists for the Leafs, who have won only twice in the last 10 games. Jeff Finger, Matt Stajan, Nik Antropov and Mikhail Grabovski each scored a goal, while Vesa Toskala made 16 saves in the win.

Toronto won for the first time in Colorado since March 29, 1997, having lost the last three matchups there. Ian White, Niklas Hagman, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Nikolai Kulemin each notched two assists for the Leafs.

Milan Hejduk scored twice for the Avs, who are now 1-4 on a season-long eight- game homestand. John-Michael Liles and Chris Stewart also scored, while Andrew Raycroft allowed all seven goals on 30 shots in his fifth consecutive defeat.

"We have to try to straighten things out, no question about it," said Colorado's Ryan Smyth. "This was a game we should have had. That first goal set us back on our heels, then this thing went back-and-forth. We got to start to get things right."

Down 4-3 after two periods, Colorado forged a tie on Liles' slapshot from the right circle at 3:10 of the third. But Toronto answered when Blake forced a turnover in the offensive zone and beat Raycroft in front of the crease less than two minutes later.

The Avalanche appeared to tie it only seconds after the Leafs scored, but a goaltender interference call on Smyth negated the tying goal.

"That was a fortunate break, and we got a power play, too," Blake said. "We were getting away from doing the little things; it was good to get this win. I just take each game as a challenge and move forward."

Toronto then scored twice down the stretch to seal the game, with Stajan extending the lead to 6-4 at 15:44 and Moore scoring the final goal at 18:03.

Antropov gave the Leafs the early lead, halting his 16-game goal-less streak with a tally 1:52 into the contest.

The Avs tied the game before the end of the first, as Stewart's tip-in from the crease made it 1-1 at 13:58.

Early in the second while on the power play, Colorado scored but was not awarded the goal until minutes later. Hejduk appeared to bat the puck into the net, but Toskala hit it back out while the disc was still in mid-air. The referees initially ruled it a no-goal, but a review showed the puck crossed the goal line, and the Avs took a 2-1 lead at 1:21.

Toronto made it 2-2, as Grabovski stuffed a rebound between Raycroft's legs on the power play at 3:09 of the middle period. The Maple Leafs went back ahead on Finger's slapshot from the slot at 9:40.

The lead didn't last long, as Hejduk's wrap-around goal 30 seconds later tied the score at three. But Toronto went ahead for the third time on Moore's 10th goal of the year at 14:33.

Game Notes

Toronto had lost its previous four games overall...Raycroft, who spent the last two seasons in Toronto, won seven straight starts before his five-game slide...Colorado was 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Leafs were 1- for-3...The Avs on Thursday activated forward Cody McCormick off injured reserve and placed forward David Jones on IR...Colorado will host Anaheim, Calgary and Dallas during the rest of its homestand.
