Lawson's buzzer-beater lifts UNC over Florida State

Tallahassee, FL (My Sportsbook) - Ty Lawson dribbled up the court and sank the winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lift fifth-ranked North Carolina to a thrilling 80-77 win over Florida State.

Lawson scored 21 and pulled down nine rebounds for the Tar Heels (18, 4-2 ACC), who won despite getting just eight points and five rebounds from a foul- plagued Tyler Hansbrough. This was the first time in 56 games that Hansbrough didn't break double digits in scoring, but despite shooting just 38.1 percent from the field North Carolina managed to pull through for its fourth straight win.

Danny Green added 20 points, seven rebounds and six steals, including one theft that led to a tying three-point play with just over a minute remaining.

Toney Douglas had 32 points for the Seminoles (16-5, 3-3), who were coming off a 73-62 win at Virginia on Saturday. Uche Echefu had 14 points for Florida State.

Two free throws from Douglas extended the FSU lead to 77-74 with 2:02 remaining, and Wayne Ellington then missed a three-pointer for UNC, opening the door for the Seminoles to seal the win.

But Douglas had the ball stolen by Green, who rumbled down the court for the layup and was fouled by Derwin Kitchen. The three-point play tied the contest with 1:12 remaining.

Douglas then forced and missed a three-pointer, but Chris Singleton came up with the offensive rebound. FSU called timeout with 16.3 seconds to go, but the hosts couldn't get a shot to hit the rim as Douglas was blanketed by Hansbrough.

That gave UNC the ball back with 3.2 seconds left, and Lawson received the inbounds pass, dribbled past midcourt and to the three point line before using his right hand to guide the ball into the basket.

"We tried to throw it to the center line and call timeout if they allowed us to throw it there, and if not, we were going to call timeout, or throw it to Ty Lawson and let him run as far as he can and get a shot off," said UNC coach Roy Williams. "Needless to say, it was very lucky, and very fortunate for us that it went in."

Florida State scored the game's first seven points, but the Tar Heels rallied to tie it at 9-9. FSU moved ahead 23-14 with 8:04 left in the half following a Solomon Alabi jumper.

The Tar Heels ended the half on an 18-3 spurt, grabbing a 46-35 lead. They stretched that difference to 13 early in the second half after Hansbrough's jumper made it 52-39 with 15:02 left.

The Seminoles finally pushed ahead again at 64-63 on a Luke Loucks layup with 8:29 to go, and it remained tight the rest of the contest.

Game Notes

UNC went 25-of-32 at the foul line, compared to 15-of-21 for the Seminoles...UNC leads the series between the two schools, 40-8, and has captured the last 10 encounters...Williams is 10-1 against the Seminoles, the lone loss coming in his first game against Florida State as head coach.
