Stafford's hat trick leads 10-goal assault as Sabres top Oilers

Edmonton, AB (My Sportsbook) - Drew Stafford notched his second career hat trick, leading the Buffalo Sabres in a 10-2 romp over the Edmonton Oilers.

Stafford's other career hat trick came, coincidentally, in the last game in which Buffalo totaled 10 goals. He had three goals and two assists in the Sabres' 10-1 win over Atlanta on January 18 of last year.

10 Buffalo players had at least two points in Tuesday's win, including Tim Connolly, who had two goals and a helper, and Thomas Vanek, who scored once and added two assists. Nathan Paetsch and Jochen Hecht both had a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who have won four of five overall.

Ryan Miller made 36 saves in the win.

Dwayne Roloson got the start in net for Edmonton, but gave up three goals on eight shots. Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers came in as a replacement, but allowed seven markers on 29 shots the rest of the game for the Oilers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped in dramatic fashion.

Edmonton had already given up nine goals in a game this season, a 9-2 loss to Chicago at home on December 16. But Tuesday, the Oilers tied a franchise record for most goals allowed on home ice and set a new club record for largest margin of defeat.

Erik Cole and Robert Nilsson scored the goals for Edmonton.

Buffalo wasted little time in grabbing the lead, scoring three times in the opening period. Stafford got his first just 10 seconds into the game, when he rifled a shot from the right circle past Roloson.

Paetsch scored just 61 seconds later, and Derek Roy lit the lamp just past the midway point of the first to make it 3-0. Roloson was pulled at that point, but Drouin-Deslauriers did not fare much better in the second period, when the Sabres continued their assault.

Just 2:02 into the frame, Hecht banged in the puck by the right post after engaging in some back-and-forth passing with Jason Pominville across the crease.

Cole got Edmonton on the board with a power-play tally with 6:37 remaining in the middle frame, but Connolly got the goal back 56 seconds later on the man- advantage, making it a 5-1 game.

With 2:20 left in the second, Vanek got his 29th goal of the season, and with 1:01 left, Jaroslav Spacek's point shot caromed in the left side of the net on a Buffalo power play, making it 7-1 going into the second intermission.

Stafford scored twice within a span of 1:18 in the middle of the third period, the first behind a power-play market, upping the Sabres' lead to 9-1. Nilsson got the Oilers' second goal with 2:08 left in the contest, but Connolly added a short-handed goal with 1:15 on the clock to complete the scoring.

Game Notes

Pominville had two assists for Buffalo, as did Ales Kotalik, Clarke MacArthur and Craig Rivet...The Sabres were 3-for-6 on power plays, while the Oilers went 1-for-8...Miller picked up his eighth win of January, and 23rd of the season.
