(My Sportsbook) - If there is just one team the
Atlanta Thrashers haven't enjoyed playing since entering the NHL, that club could be the
Dallas Stars. Atlanta will try for just its second win in franchise history against Dallas when it visits American Airlines Center tonight.
Since entering the league as an expansion club in 1999-2000, the Thrashers have clashed with the Stars 10 times and have captured just one victory in that span. Dallas won its first eight contests versus Atlanta until the Thrashers posted a victory in Texas on January 18, 2006. The clubs last met on November 17, 2006, a 5-3 road win for the Stars.
Atlanta is 1-4-0 all-time in Dallas.
All-Star Ilya Kovalchuk has zero goals and two assists in seven games versus the Stars, while netminder Kari Lehtonen is 1-0-0 with a 3.91 goals against average in two starts against them. Kovalchuk leads Atlanta with 49 points and was held off the scoresheet in Sunday's 12-11 shootout win by the Eastern Conference at the All-Star Game in Montreal.
The Thrashers also have had little luck against the team that they played prior to the All-Star break. Atlanta had a three-game winning streak halted when it dropped a 5-3 test in Philadelphia, its 13th consecutive defeat at the hands of the Flyers.
Last in the Southeast Division with 39 points, the Thrashers are tied with Ottawa for 13th in the Eastern Conference, ahead of only the New York Islanders and their 31 points.
Atlanta has lost five of its last seven on the road and is 8-13-3 overall as the visiting club this year. The Thrashers will host the Islanders on Thursday before hitting the road again for two straight.
The Stars come out of the break aiming to win back-to-back games for the first time since December 23-27. Dallas is 5-4-2 in 11 games since and defeated Florida back on January 21.
One year after a run to the Western Conference finals, the Stars find themselves fourth in the Pacific Division with 47 points and four spots out of a playoff spot in the West.
Dallas has won seven of its last nine at home and is 11-6-4 at American Airlines Center this year. The Stars play their next two on the road following tonight's test.
Stars center Mike Modano notched an assist in Sunday's All-Star game, while defenseman Stephane Robidas did not notch a point after getting into the clash as an injury replacement for Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom.
Modano has six goals and an assist in his career versus the Thrashers and netminder Marty Turco has never lost to them, going a perfect 5-0-0 with a 1.60 GAA. Turco is just 19-16-7 with a 3.08 GAA this year and is well ahead of the career-worst 2.55 GAA he posted in 2005-06.
