New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The Duke Blue Devils are back in a familiar place -- the top of the latest Associated Press poll released on Monday.
The Blue Devils (18-1) have won 10 in a row since their lone loss of the season, a setback to Michigan on December 6, and used wins over North Carolina State and Maryland last week to garner 62 first-place votes to move up one spot in the poll.
Duke hasn't held the top spot since the concluding poll of the 2005-06 campaign and posted 1,789 points from a nationwide media panel. It marks the Blue Devils' 111th week at the No. 1 spot in school history, the second- highest figure behind only UCLA (134 weeks). Of those 111 weeks as the top- ranked team, 56 of those have come since the 1997-98 season.
This marks the third time in the last four weeks that there has been a new No. 1. Pittsburgh (18-1) held the spot for a pair of weeks for the first time in school history before giving way to Wake Forest (18-1) last Monday. However, a 78-71 setback to Virginia Tech on Wednesday ended the Demon Deacons' season- opening 16-game winning streak.
Wake Forest tumbled all the way to sixth with the loss, while the Panthers rose one spot to three and captured a trio of first-place votes. Connecticut (18-1) also advanced one ring on the ladder to No. 2 and received six first- place votes.
New No. 4 Oklahoma (19-1) and fifth-ranked North Carolina (17-2) round out the top five.
Louisville jumped up a pair of spots into seventh, while Marquette, Michigan State and Xavier round out the top 10. Both the Golden Eagles and Musketeers advanced in the poll, while the Spartans fell two spots to nine thanks to a setback to Northwestern last week.
Texas came in at 11, followed by Clemson, Butler, Arizona State and Syracuse. The next five in the poll include Purdue, UCLA, Memphis, Illinois and Gonzaga in that order.
Gonzaga finished at No. 20 on Monday, followed by Villanova. The next three spots are occupied by newcomers, including Saint Mary's at 22, followed by Washington and Kentucky. Georgetown rounded out the poll, falling 13 places to 25th following losses to West Virginia and Seton Hall last week that pushed the Hoyas' current losing streak to three games.
Falling out of the poll this week was Minnesota, Notre Dame and Florida.
