Memphis, TN (My Sportsbook) - Lionel Hollins was officially named the next head coach of the
Memphis Grizzlies, as announced by general manager Chris Wallace on Sunday.
Hollins, who left his assistant coaching position in Milwaukee to take the job, will make his third coaching stint for the Grizzlies.
The 55-year-old had served as an assistant when the expansion club, then located in Vancouver, began play in 1995-96. He eventually took over as head coach for the final 60 games of the 1999-2000 campaign after Brian Hill was fired and guided the team to a mark of 18-42.
In addition, he lost four games as the interim coach during the 2004-05 season -- taking the reins after Hubie Brown resigned and before Mike Fratello was hired.
"We are pleased today to introduce Lionel Hollins as the next head coach of the Grizzlies. Lionel brings an impressive resume of NBA experience both as a coach and player," Wallace said. "He has worked under some of the most successful head coaches in the history of the NBA, and he's a former NBA champion as a player."
Hollins was also an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns from 1988-95.
The Grizzlies, currently on a nine-game losing streak, fired Marc Iavaroni on Friday after he led the club to a paltry 11-30 record. In two seasons with Memphis, Iavaroni had an overall record of 33-90.
Johnny Davis, Hollins' teammate in Portland when the Trail Blazers won the NBA title in 1977, was named interim head coach after Iavaroni's firing and lost both games at the helm.
