South Bend, IN (My Sportsbook) - Jerome Dyson led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points and nine rebounds and Connecticut held the high-octane Notre Dame offense to its lowest scoring output of the season, as the No. 3 Huskies posted an impressive 69-61 victory over the 19th-ranked Fighting Irish, snapping the nation's longest home-winning streak at 45 games.
The loss was the first for Notre Dame at the Joyce Center since an 80-72 loss to Marquette on Feb. 25, 2006. The Irish had also won a Big East record-tying 20 straight conference games on their home turf.
With the emphatic win, the Huskies (18-1, 7-1 Big East) have reeled off seven straight victories after dropping its conference opener to Georgetown.
"I couldn't be prouder of my team because we won by staying together and playing defense," Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun said.
Jeff Adrien dominated the glass with a career-high 19 rebounds to go with 12 points, and fellow frontcourt standout Hasheem Thabeet contributed 11 boards, nine points and five blocks for the victors. A.J. Price chipped in 13 points as well.
Luke Harangody carried the Irish (12-6, 3-4) with 24 points and 15 boards, but the rest of the club hit a paltry 15-of-53 (28.3 percent) from the floor.
"We got great looks, but we just couldn't hit them, myself included and that's going to happen," Harangody said. "All the credit goes to Connecticut, they came in here to win. It was a crazy atmosphere, the students were great, the fans were great, but we just couldn't hit the shots."
Kyle McAlarney hit his first three shots -- each from three-point range -- but missed his final 12 attempts from the field, finishing with nine points as Notre Dame dropped its third straight game.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Huskies pounded the ball inside with early success coming out of the break. Adrien and Dyson each recorded three- point plays and Thabeet cleaned up his own miss as part of a 12-2 run that put the visitors ahead 42-33 four minutes in.
Following a timeout trailing by 10 a few possessions later, the Irish inched back with timely shooting. Harangody hit a three and took a charge against Thabeet, and Tory Jackson hit another from three-point land to pull ND within four.
Notre Dame held UConn to only one field goal between the 15- and eight-minute marks but caught a rare cold streak from the perimeter.
Dyson's scoop in the lane was the catalyst behind eight straight points for the visitors, who led 57-47 with five minutes remaining.
The hosts missed eight in a row from the field and Kemba Walker's three- pointer gave the Huskies a 12-point lead with just over three minutes left, taking the crowd out of the game.
The Irish were able to get several easy baskets down the stretch to make the final score slightly more respectable.
The first five baskets of the game were three-pointers and the clubs appeared to fall in love with the deep ball.
UConn wound up hitting a mediocre 4-of-14 from downtown, while the Irish connected on 5-of-12 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes. It stayed close throughout the first half and the Huskies took a 30-29 lead at the break on Gavin Edwards' alley-oop throw down over Harangody.
