Panthers welcome Stars to town

(My Sportsbook) - The Florida Panthers will try to record at least a point in their ninth straight game in 2009 tonight, as they receive a visit from the Dallas Stars to BankAtlantic Center.

Though the Panthers have lost two of their last three, they have yet to lose in regulation in the new year. Florida is 5-0-3 over its last eight games and earned a point in Monday's 3-2 shootout loss to Buffalo.

David Booth had a goal and an assist and Nathan Horton also lit the lamp, while Tomas Vokoun stopped 21 shots. However, Vokoun was beaten twice in the shootout, while Booth and Horton both failed to find the back of the net.

Jay Bouwmeester had scored in four straight games and also had a point in each of his last six contests (4 goals, 3 assists), but both streaks came to an end on Monday. Bouwmeester will represent the Panthers and the Eastern Conference in this weekend's All-Star game at Montreal.

The Panthers are still 13-5-5 over their last 23 games and are 13 points back of first-place Washington in the Southeast Division and fell a point behind Carolina for second place after the Hurricanes' win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

Ville Peltonen is questionable for tonight due to a knee injury that caused him to miss the Sabres contest. He suffered the ailment versus Tampa Bay on a knee-to-knee collision with the Lightning's Evgeny Artyukhin, who was penalized on the play and later suspended by the NHL for two games.

Florida has earned a point in each of its last four home games (2-0-2) and is 10-5-5 as the host this season. The Panthers continue a four-game homestand after the break with visits from Philadelphia and Montreal.

One season after reaching the Western Conference finals, the Stars find themselves in 12th place in the conference standings. The club has lost four of its last six, including Monday's 4-2 setback in Tampa Bay.

Brad Richards, who was facing his former team for the first time since being traded by the Lightning to the Stars last season, had a goal and an assist in the setback. Loui Eriksson also scored for Dallas, while Marty Turco allowed three goals on 19 shots in the loss.

The defeat was the Stars' third straight on the road and they fell to 8-12-3 as the visiting team this season. Dallas' first game after the All-Star break will be a home test versus Atlanta before the team hits the road for another two in a row.

Mike Modano is Dallas' only All-Star representative for this weekend and has failed to score in each of his last six games. He has two assists in that span and is a minus-four over his last four games.

These two clubs haven't met since Florida notched a 2-1 overtime win at home on March 1, 2007. The Panthers have won four of the last six meetings in the series and two straight as the host.

Turco is 1-3-0 with a 2.24 goals against average in his career versus Florida, while Vokoun is just 6-16-0 with a tie and 2.52 GAA versus Dallas.
