(My Sportsbook) - Jerry Sloan hopes to celebrate his new contract extension with a win Tuesday when the Utah Jazz return home to face the improving
Minnesota Timberwolves at EnergySolutions Arena.
Sloan agreed to return as Utah's head coach for the 2009-10 season, which will mark his 22nd season at the helm of the Jazz, on Sunday. The veteran mentor has been Utah's head coach since assuming the reigns from Frank Layden, on December 9, 1988.
The fourth-winningest coach in NBA history (1113-734), Sloan is the longest tenured active coach with one team in major professional sports, and is also the longest tenured head coach in NBA history.
Over his first 20 seasons with the Jazz, Sloan has produced two conference championships, seven division titles, 16 consecutive winning seasons, 12 seasons with 50-plus wins and 18 playoff appearances and is seeking his third straight Northwest Division title in 2008-09.
Most recently, the Jazz, fell in Dallas on Saturday when Dirk Nowitzki scored 39 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Mavericks past Utah 115-108 at American Airlines Center,
The Jazz were topped by Deron Williams, who scored 30 and had nine assists before fouling out late in the game.
Mehmet Okur had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Jazz, who finished a three- game road swing at 1-2. They've also dropped 10 of their last 11 at Dallas.
The Wolves, meanwhile, won for the seventh time in eight games and improved to 2-0 on a three-game road trip Monday when Al Jefferson scored 20 points and equaled a season-high by grabbing 17 rebounds as Minnesota held off the Los Angeles Clippers, 94-86, at Staples Center.
Craig Smith turned in a solid effort with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Randy Foye chipped in with 17 points and four assists for the Wolves, who have won four straight road games and improved to 7-13 as the visitor on the year.
Ryan Gomes contributed 14 points and five boards in the win.
Utah, which is a gaudy 16-4 in Salt Lake City this season, has won two straight and six of their last eight meetings with the T-Wolves, including a 99-96 triumph in Minneapolis last month. The Jazz have also won five straight over Minnesota at EnergySolutions Arena.
