New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Wake Forest is the lone unbeaten team in men's college
basketball and has ascended to the top of the latest Associated Press poll.
Wake Forest (16-0) won a battle of unbeatens on Saturday with a 78-68 triumph at Clemson. Pittsburgh was also undefeated heading to the weekend and fell at Louisville, costing the Panthers the top spot in the poll after a two-week stay.
The Demon Deacons were not a unanimous choice, despite being the only team without a loss, earning 68 first-place votes and a total of 1,793 points from a nationwide media panel. Wake Forest, ranked second last week, was last the No. 1 team for two weeks in November of 2004.
Duke received the other four first-place votes and 1,721 points. The Blue Devils moved up a spot from last week into second, following victories at Georgia Tech and at home against Georgetown.
Connecticut also moved up one spot to third, while Pittsburgh fell to fourth. North Carolina, Oklahoma, Michigan State and Syracuse retained their spots from fifth through eighth, while Louisville and Clemson round out this week's top-10.
Syracuse kept the eighth spot after splitting a pair of games against ranked opponents last week. The Orange lost at Georgetown, then beat Notre Dame at the Carrier Dome.
Louisville, which beat Notre Dame in overtime to start the week and rallied for a 69-63 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, vaulted 11 spots from 20th to ninth. Clemson, despite the loss to Wake Forest, held its place at 10th.
The second 10 consists of Marquette, Georgetown, UCLA, Texas, Xavier, Butler, Arizona State, Purdue, Notre Dame and Villanova.
Marquette moved up three spots and Georgetown, despite a 76-67 loss at Cameron Indoor Stadium, slid one spot up into 12th. UCLA, after an overtime loss at home to Arizona State, fell four places from ninth. Arizona State, before ending UCLA's 10-game winning streak, dropped a spot thanks to a loss at Southern California earlier in the week. Notre Dame fell seven spots from 12th after its two losses.
Minnesota dropped three spots from 18th to 21st after a loss at Northwestern on Sunday, and the last four teams are new to the poll this week, as Memphis, Gonzaga, Florida and Illinois joined the rankings. Of the four, only Illinois was not ranked previously this season.
Baylor, California, Tennessee and Michigan dropped out of the rankings this week.
A loss to Texas A&M and an overtime win over Oklahoma State cost Baylor its spot in the poll, while Cal's stay lasted just one week thanks to a loss to arch-rival Stanford. Tennessee, ranked as high as eighth earlier this season, lost to Kentucky last week and Michigan dropped a pair of games.
In addition to Monday's battle between Syracuse and Pittsburgh, the rugged Big East features three more contests this week between top-25 foes. Connecticut hosts Villanova on Wednesday, then visits Notre Dame on Saturday, while Syracuse hosts Louisville on Sunday.
Also this week, Clemson visits North Carolina in the ACC on Wednesday and Minnesota hosts Purdue in the Big Ten on Thursday.
Wake Forest's lone game this week is Wednesday at home against Virginia Tech. The Deacons will then welcome Duke in a potential 1-2 matchup the following Wednesday.
