Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Ryan Smyth and Milan Hejduk both registered their 300th career goal, as the
Colorado Avalanche defeated the
Calgary Flames, 6-2, on a historic night at Pepsi Center.
Smyth added two assists for the Avalanche, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Marek Svatos, Chris Stewart, Cody McLeod and Ruslan Salei also scored, while Peter Budaj made 39 saves to halt a personal four-game skid.
Hejduk and Smyth became only the second teammates in NHL history to both record their 300th career goal in the same game. Danny Gare and Ivan Boldirev accomplished the feat for Detroit on February 26, 1983 against the New York Islanders at Joe Louis Arena.
"To score 300 is quite an accomplishment, it's an honor," said Smyth. "It's extra special when you win."
Michael Cammalleri and Rene Bourque tallied for Calgary, which has dropped two straight. With workhorse Miikka Kiprusoff given a rare night off, Curtis McElhinney made just his third start of the season for the Flames and was victimized six times on 39 shots.
"It's disappointing to lose two in a row," Cammalleri said. "There won't be too much of a chance for a skid."
Colorado netted a pair of goals late in the opening frame.
While on the power play, Smyth's bid from in close was stopped, but Svatos banged in the rebound with 3:27 remaining.
Stewart then caught up to a loose puck at the Calgary blueline, made a nifty move to go around a Flames defenseman and slipped the disc past the right pad of McElhinney with 1:32 left in the first period.
"We had a good first period tonight," said Hejduk. "The power play was good and we just went from there. We put a lot of pucks on the net and we wanted him (McElhinney) to feel uncomfortable."
Calgary got on the board in the waning seconds of a lengthy two-man advantage. Jarome Iginla held the puck at the left point and sent a pass to the bottom of the right circle for Cammalleri, who dropped to one knee and one-timed it past Budaj with 9:38 to go in the middle stanza.
Smyth's shorthanded tally with seven minutes remaining in the second restored a two-goal lead for the Avs. Smyth darted down the right side, drifted into the faceoff circle and snapped a wrister through McElhinney.
Colorado led 4-1 after Hejduk struck on the power play. Hejduk accepted a pass from John-Michael Liles, came off the left wall, walked to the middle of the circle and rifled a shot that beat McElhinney with 2:16 left before the second intermission.
Bourque trimmed the deficit to two with a wraparound goal 5:30 into the third period. Salei lit the lamp with 4:33 remaining and McLeod capped the scoring with less than a second left on the clock.
