New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Philadelphia Phillies slugging first baseman Ryan Howard and pitcher Cole Hamels, MVP of the World Series, were among 111 players filing for salary arbitration before a deadline on Thursday. Howard, who made $10 million through arbitration last year, figures to hike that figure for 2009 after he clubbed 48 homers and knocked in 146 runs, both topping the majors, last season. The $10 million Howard made for his one-year deal is a record for first-time arbitration-eligible players. Hamels, a powerful left-hander, who went 14-10 with a 3.09 ERA during the regular season and then went 4-0 in five playoff contests, made $500,000 last season. This will be his first time through arbitration. Other big names to file on Thursday were Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder, Florida second baseman Dan Uggla and Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks. Figures will be exchanged next Tuesday for players who haven't settled on contracts yet. The hearings are scheduled for February 1-21 in Arizona. Eight players from the Phillies filed for arbitration, the most of any team.
