Arlington, TX (My Sportsbook) - The Texas Rangers have signed pitcher Brandon McCarthy to a contract for the 2009 campaign, avoiding arbitration with the 25-year-old right-hander. Financial terms were not released. McCarthy recorded a 1-1 record with a 4.09 earned run average in five starts for the Rangers last season. He spent much of the season on the disabled list because of inflammation in his right forearm, and also missed time with a strained flexor tendon in his right middle finger. The Glendale, California native went 1-1 with a 3.41 ERA in seven starts with the Arizona League Rangers and Triple-A Oklahoma. McCarthy is 13-20 with a 4.54 ERA in 93 career games (39 starts) with the White Sox and Rangers. Texas has three players eligible for arbitration in outfielder Marlon Byrd, and pitchers Frank Francisco and C.J. Wilson.
