Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - Jay Gibbons was one of eight free agents to sign a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins and receive an invitation to spring training on Tuesday. Gibbons, who turns 32 in March, broke into the majors with Baltimore in 2001 and spent seven years with the organization before he was released on the eve of opening day last season following an admission to using human growth hormone. With no big league clubs showing interest in the veteran outfielder, Gibbons joined the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League for a short time before signing a minor league deal with the Brewers. Gibbons batted .308 with five homers and 17 RBI in 34 games between Double-A Huntsville and Triple-A Nashville. Gibbons appeared in 779 games with the Orioles, sporting a .260 average with 121 homers and 405 RBI. The Marlins also signed pitchers Brian Sanches, Michael Wood, Willie Collazo and John Koronka; infielders John Lindsey and Andy Gonzalez; and outfielder Michael Ryan.
