Norman, OK (My Sportsbook) - Blake Griffin scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as sixth-ranked Oklahoma surged to a 78-63 win over No. 11 Texas, as the Sooners snapped a six-game skid against the Longhorns.
Willie Warren added 17 points, Tony Crocker scored 16 and Austin Johnson netted 15 for the Sooners (16-1, 2-0 Big 12), who have won their last 14 games at the Lloyd Noble Center. It was Oklahoma's fourth straight win overall.
"Texas is a dangerous team. For us to get on them early and not lose that is big," said Griffin. "I know they kind of got close there at one point, but everybody did a great job of bearing down and getting stops on defense, coming down and hitting shots, and executing."
A.J. Abrams struggled from the field, but had a game-high 22 points for Texas (12-4, 1-1), which lost for the second time in three games. Abrams went 8-of-27 from the field, including 3-of-15 from three-point range. Damion James added 12 points for the Longhorns, but played just six minutes in the opening half.
"He wasn't hurt," said Texas coach Rick Barnes of James. "We started the game and knew we had to have a great game defensively, and I think he gave up the first five points of the game. We had talked about what we wanted to do and we didn't get it done. But (James) wasn't the only one who started the game. I think Oklahoma came out and knew what they wanted to do and when they wanted to do it, and in the first 10 minutes we didn't give them any resistance at all."
Oklahoma scored the first five points of the contest and led by as many as 16 in the first half (24-8). The 16-point lead came after Griffin jammed with 9:23 remaining, and the hosts carried a 38-27 cushion to the intermission.
The Sooners put the game away with a 12-0 second-half run that included scores by five Oklahoma players. A three-pointer by James had the Longhorns within 54-50, but the Sooners then ran off their game-sealing burst, which was capped by Taylor Griffin's two foul shots with 5:04 remaining.
"Our defense was tremendous today," said Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel. "We went all man. We did not play one possession of zone, 1-3-1 or anything. It was just good solid man-to-man. I thought our guys followed our game plan."
