Louisville, KY (My Sportsbook) - Terrence Williams scored 24 points, pulled down a game-best 16 rebounds and dished out eight assists as 20th-ranked Louisville used a hot hand to upend 12th-ranked Notre Dame, 87-73, in overtime at Freedom Hall.

Samardo Samuels had 18 points for the Cardinals (12-3, 3-0 Big East), who have won four in a row but face a big test on Saturday, hosting top-ranked Pittsburgh. Earl Clark posted 15 points and 10 boards, while Andre McGee had 10.

Luke Harangody scored a game-high 28 points with 13 rebounds for the Irish (12-4, 3-2), whose two-game win streak was snapped. Kyle McAlarney added 19 points including a 5-of-6 effort on three-pointers, and Tory Jackson had nine points with six assists.

Clark's trey from the left side made it 76-73 for Louisville less than a minute into the extra session. Samuels then completed a three-point play for a six-point bulge. After a miss by Harangody at the other end, Williams hit a leaning lay-in in the paint and the Cardinals had an 81-73 advantage.

Cold shooting continued to doom the Irish from there, and McGee finished off the win with four of the Cardinals' final six points.

"That was as good of college basketball game as you'll see," gushed Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino. "There was tremendous play by so many people on both sides. I am really excited about the way our guys played. It is not easy to keep bringing it and that was my biggest fear going into this game. Our guys really reached back."

Louisville scored nine in a row early to snap a tie and go up 17-8 on a Williams lay-up, but the Irish countered quickly, reeling off a 14-4 run.

A Ryan Ayers three and a jumper off the break from Jackson gave Notre Dame a 22-21 edge with 8:03 to play, but the Cards turned around on an 8-3 run for a 29-25 edge on a Williams jumper.

Five straight points ending with Luke Zeller's deuce gave ND a one-point lead, but Louisville went back up 39-35 on a three from Williams with 1:33 left. McAlarney drained a three, but Edgar Sosa hit a short jumper and the home team went to the break up 41-38.

Notre Dame reeled off the first seven points in the second half to go up by four and largely maintained that distance until McGee nailed a three for a 55-55 tie at the 5:36 mark.

That bucket kicked off a 9-2 run which gave the Cardinals a 64-57 lead after Williams hit another from long distance with 11:23 remaining.

McAlarney hit a deuce to end the burst, sending the Irish on a 14-3 clip for a four-point lead, 71-67, with 5:35 left after Harangody nailed a jumper then hit two free throws.

Two from the line by Samuels, plus his layup with 3:22 to play in regulation, knotted the game 71-71 and each side missed multiple chances from there to break the deadlock.

Notre Dame had the last possession, but Jackson lost the ball in the lane and a scramble resulted in a backcourt call with eight-tenths of a second on the clock. Williams unloaded a contested jumper on the inbound but missed as time ran out.

"I'm proud of our group because we answered every run," said Irish head coach Mike Brey. "We were on the ropes a little bit in the second half, but you have to win it in regulation. Louisville made really key plays down in the overtime. The wind is taken out of your sails, but for us, we are going to be in a lot of tough atmospheres on the road in this league against good teams."

Game Notes

Louisville has won 15 of 23 meetings...Zach Hillesland made Notre Dame's lone field goal in overtime...The Cardinals owned a 48-43 edge on the glass...The Irish made just 1-of-8 field goals in the extra session, but finished the game shooting 42.9 percent from the floor while the Cardinals hit 42.5 percent...Notre Dame plays at Syracuse on Saturday.
