Winston-Salem, NC (My Sportsbook) - Jeff Teague scored a career-high 34 points, and made 13-of-15 from the free throw line to help fourth-ranked Wake Forest hold off No. 3 North Carolina, 92-89, in its ACC opener.

Chas McFarland finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for Wake Forest (14-0, 1-0 ACC), which ran its home record to 8-0 this season. James Johnson and Al-Farouq Aminu each contributed nine points in the win for the Demon Deacons.

Danny Green had 22 points for the Tar Heels (14-2, 0-2), who lost for the second consecutive Sunday and are still in search of their first conference win. On January 4, North Carolina dropped an 85-78 decision at home to Boston College, snapping the team's 13-game win streak and sending the Tar Heels tumbling from the top spot in the Top-25 poll.

Wayne Ellington and Tyler Hansbrough each added 17 points in the loss for UNC, while Hansbrough also brought down 11 rebounds.

A tie game at halftime, the contest was close through the early part of the second half. Wake Forest, though, managed to grab a multi-possession lead when Tony Woods made two free throws, and Teague followed with a three-pointer to put Wake up 63-58 with under 13 minutes to play.

Several minutes later, Teague followed a Woods dunk with a pair from the line for a 70-63 advantage with just over nine minutes left.

Wake Forest continued to hold the lead, and though North Carolina got within one possession multiple times down the stretch, the Demon Deacons always had an answer. A Green triple and Ty Lawson basket brought the Tar Heels within 75-72, but the seven-foot McFarland answered with a lumbering fastbreak layup, and Johnson had a dunk to put the Demon Deacons up by seven with five minutes on the clock.

After an Aminu free throw set Wake Forest's lead at 87-80 with 1:24 on the clock, Ellington was fouled on a three-point attempt, and made all three foul shots with 1:16 left. Teague, though, got to the line and made both shots for an 89-83 Wake lead.

Lawson then drove for a quick layup and was fouled with 46.9 ticks remaining, and made the shot to again get UNC within three. The Tar Heels' defense forced Wake Forest into an awkward offensive set on the ensuing possession, and the Deacons called timeout with 38.5 seconds left to regroup. Following the timeout, Teague was fouled with 19.2 on the clock and made both for a 91-86 edge.

Ellington's quick three on the other end was off the mark, taking valuable time off the clock, and the ball went out of bounds with 9.8 left. UNC retained possession, and Will Graves drilled a high-arcing three from the right side.

It got the Tar Heels within two, and they fouled Teague with 3.3 left. He made only the first, but UNC's desperation heave at the end was well off the mark, sealing the Wake Forest win.

In a close first half, neither team had a major advantage, though McFarland's pair from the line gave Wake a 38-32 lead with a little under six minutes to go. UNC came back to take the lead, 40-39, on two Green free throws. The teams were close until halftime, and Woods' layup made it a 44-44 game at the intermission.

Game Notes

Wake Forest had won all its previous home games this season by double digits...North Carolina still owns a 151-64 lead all-time in the series between the schools...The Demon Deacons snapped a four-game losing streak versus UNC.
