Stoudemire, Suns hold off Clippers

Los Angeles, CA (My Sportsbook) - Amare Stoudemire posted 26 points and seven rebounds, and the Phoenix Suns handed the Los Angeles Clippers their 11th straight loss in a 109-103 decision.

Grant Hill and Jason Richardson each added 21 points, and Shaquille O'Neal logged 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who have won five of six. Steve Nash handed out 12 assists to go with 14 points for the victors.

"Every team that plays us played over their heads," O'Neal said. "Down the stretch we played good defense and made some key stops."

The Clippers opened a six-game homestand on the wrong foot, as Al Thornton finished with a team-high 23 points and eight rebounds in yet another setback. Marcus Camby recorded 18 points and 18 boards, while Mardy Collins and Eric Gordon chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively.

"We competed the full 48 minutes, but we made mistakes," Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We had eight charges; I didn't agree with all of them, which got me ejected. During the last couple of minutes, offensively we had wide-open shots. We didn't make them."

LA was behind by 13 to begin the fourth before a furious rally brought a little hope to the home crowd. The Clippers scored 16 of the first 19 points of the quarter, as Steve Novak's second three-pointer of the flurry tied the game, 89-89, with just over eight minutes remaining.

It went back-and-forth for the remainder of the game, as Thornton's bucket gave LA a 98-95 lead with 4 1/2 minutes to play.

The Suns buckled down on defense and kept the Clippers from making a field goal until a meaningless three at the buzzer. Nash broke a 100-100 tie with a jumper, and after a Camby miss, O'Neal converted a three-point play at the two-minute mark for a five-point lead.

The visitors then sunk four straight free throws, and Gordon's errant three- point tries in consecutive possessions sealed LA's fate.

It appeared to be another lopsided affair in the Staples Center after Phoenix scored the game's first 12 points.

But LA slowly chipped away, trailing 31-25 after the first and remaining six points down, 59-53, at the intermission.

A 15-3 run finished off by a Nash trey late in the third quarter aided the Suns' 86-73 lead heading to the final stanza.

Game Notes

Los Angeles will also host the Hawks, Bucks, Timberwolves, Lakers and Thunder on its homestand...La was still without Baron Davis (bruised tailbone), Chris Kaman (foot) and Zach Randolph (left knee)...The Suns have won 13 of the last 18 matchups in this series...Leandro Barbosa had 10 points for the Suns, while Fred Jones had 13 points and 10 assists for the Clippers.
