Auckland, New Zealand (My Sportsbook) - Top-seeded Elena Dementieva breezed past fellow Russian Elena Vesnina in Saturday's final at the WTA Tour's season-opening $220,000 ASB Classic.
The two-time major runner-up Dementieva beat Vesnina 6-4, 6-1 in a match that lasted nearly 1 1/2 hours, and came away $37,000 richer.
Dementieva, 27, captured her 12th career title in her 25th final. She was a three-time titlist last year, including a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
"The crowd's support was awesome, not just today but all week," said Dementieva. "It was a pleasure to come here and play this tournament. We all really felt at home here, it was very nice. And for the first time my mom isn't here with me, so I'm especially happy to take this trophy back home for her."
This was the 17th all-Russian singles final in WTA Tour history; Dementieva has been in over half of them. She has now been in nine, and is 4-5 in those encounters.
The 22-year-old Vesnina, who reached her first final and earned $19,000, took Dementieva to three sets in their lone previous encounter, in 2006 in The Netherlands.
"It was a great week for me. I'm really happy my first final happened here in Auckland," said Vesnina. "It's a very nice place to be. From the first match, I really fell in love with this city. I'd like to congratulate Elena for her great week - she played really well and deserved this title."
