Milwaukee, WI (My Sportsbook) - The Milwaukee Brewers have signed right- handed closer Trevor Hoffman to a one-year deal, which likely includes an option for a second season. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that the deal will be between $6 million and $7 million and could be announced as early as Thursday. The all-time saves leader with 554, Hoffman saved 30 games last season for the San Diego Padres, while posting a 3-6 record with a 3.77 ERA, his highest since the 1995 season. Hoffman had spent the last 16 seasons in San Diego and tried to work out a deal with the Padres after the season. However, talks soured and the team withdrew their $4 million contract offer to Hoffman in November. The 41-year-old Hoffman, who was originally drafted as an infield prospect by Cincinnati in 1989, has managed a 56-66 record with a 2.78 ERA in 930 games over the course of 16 seasons. In 988 innings, he has surrendered 305 earned runs and 274 walks to 1,055 strikeouts. Hoffman broke into the majors and appeared in two games for the Florida Marlins in 1993, but was dealt to San Diego later that season and has pitched there ever since. Hoffman, who was also being courted by the Los Angeles Dodgers, is a six-time All-Star and has finished second in Cy Young Award voting twice, most recently in 2006 when he saved 46 games to go along with a 2.14 ERA for the NL West champion Padres. He has recorded a major-league record 13 seasons of 30 or more saves, including nine seasons with 40 of more.
