Berea, OH (My Sportsbook) - It didn't take long for Eric Mangini to find a new home, as the former New York Jets head coach reached an agreement on Wednesday to lead the Cleveland Browns in the same capacity. Terms of the contract were not released. Mangini led the Jets to a solid 9-7 record and a third-place finish in a tough AFC East division this past season, but a paltry 1-4 mark down the stretch kept New York out of the playoffs and led to his eventual firing just last week. The Browns, meanwhile, struggled mightily throughout the 2008 campaign and finished with a 4-12 record despite lofty preseason expectations. The disappointing campaign led to a change in the front office, as general manager Phil Savage and head coach Romeo Crennel were both shown the door. The 37-year-old Mangini finished with a 23-25 mark and one playoff appearance in his three years in New York, making the postseason in his first season and overseeing a dismal 4-12 campaign in 2007. Expectations for the Jets rose to new levels after the previous offseason featured the acquisition of future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. An 8-3 start to the season left New York with its playoff destiny in its hands, but an inexplicable loss to lowly Seattle in Week 16 was followed by a defeat to division rival Miami in the season finale, essentially costing Mangini his job. Mangini has a history in Cleveland, as he received his first coaching opportunity in 1995 with the Browns. There he served as an assistant to head coach Bill Belichick, who was also a mentor to Mangini in New England, where Mangini was defensive backs coach (2000-04) and defensive coordinator (2005) before hooking up with the Jets.
