(My Sportsbook) - Mats Sundin could make his much-anticipated debut for the
Vancouver Canucks tonight, as his new club visits the
Edmonton Oilers for a Northwest Division clash at Rexall Place.
Sundin has made the trip to Edmonton, but it's still not 100-percent clear if he will play in tonight's game. Sundin, who has 555 career goals, signed a one-year deal with Vancouver in mid-December and has been working his way back into playing shape since then. The Swedish superstar participated in his first full practice with the Canucks on Monday and practiced again with the club on Tuesday.
If Sundin is unable to go in this evening's contest then he will make his debut in front of the Vancouver fans this Friday against St. Louis. The 37- year-old Sundin last played on March 29 while still a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Canucks are coming off back-to-back losses, but were able to earn points in both games as both setbacks came via the shootout. Vancouver lost 4-3 in Atlanta on Friday and was then handed a 3-2 defeat this past Sunday against visiting Dallas.
Vancouver, which is second in the Northwest with 47 points, has lost five of its last seven contests, but enters tonight riding a three-game point streak (1-0-2).
The Stars earned the win in Vancouver thanks to the game-winning shootout goal by rookie winger James Neal. Kyle Wellwood and Darcy Hordichuk scored first- period goals for Vancouver.
Jason LaBarbera was stunning between the pipes in his third straight start since joining the team, making 34 saves in defeat. A six-save overtime performance was preceded by a third stanza in which the netminder made several dazzling saves to keep a pressing Dallas squad at bay.
LaBarbera was acquired last week in a trade with Los Angeles to help bridge the gap until franchise goaltender Roberto Luongo is ready to return from a strained groin.
The Canucks have lost three of their last four road games and are 10-9-3 as the visiting team this season. Next up for Vancouver is a five-game homestand that begins Friday against St. Louis.
Meanwhile, the Oilers will aim for their third straight victory when they take the ice tonight.
The Oilers, who are tied for last in the division with 41 points, are unbeaten in 2009, posting wins over Dallas and the New York Islanders at the start of a five-game homestand.
Edmonton earned a close victory over the visiting Islanders on Monday, picking up a 3-2 decision. Andrew Cogliano scored the game-winning goal near the halfway mark of the third period to lift the Oilers to their fifth win in seven games.
Jason Strudwick and Kyle Brodziak each had a goal for the Oilers, while Dwayne Roloson made 25 saves in the win.
In addition to kicking off its residency with back-to-back wins, Edmonton has posted victories in four of its last five home contests. The Oilers, who are 8-6-3 at Rexall Place this year, will also host San Jose and St. Louis to complete the homestand.
The Canucks and Oilers have played four times already this season and have split those meetings. Edmonton has taken six of the last 10 encounters in the series and the Canucks have lost three of four at Rexall Place.
