Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - Longtime Kansas City Chiefs executive Carl Peterson stepped down as president, general manager and CEO after 20 years of service with the team on Tuesday.

Peterson joined the Chiefs in 1989 and guided Kansas City to a 176-143-1 record in his 20 years of service. The team captured four AFC West titles and reached the AFC Championship game in 1993. Since the start of Peterson's tenure with the team, Kansas City produced a winning record in 13 seasons, finished 13-3 three times (1995, 1997 and 2003) and boasted an 8-0 regular season mark at Arrowhead Stadium in each of those years.

However, the Chiefs finished the 2008 season with a 2-14 record, resulting in their second consecutive losing season as the team went 4-12 last season.

"I am proud of my association with the Kansas City Chiefs and our many accomplishments over the last 20 years," said Peterson. "I thank the Hunt family for the opportunity to lead the Chiefs organization and sincerely appreciate all the coaches, players, administrators and Chiefs employees with whom I've had the pleasure of working with in my time here. Executive vice president and chief operating officer Denny Thum will serve as the Chiefs' interim president and general manager following Peterson's departure.
