STARS SHINE IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC
Brandon Moss had two hits including a go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning, earning the "Star of Stars" award, as the Southern Division defeated the Northern Division 4-2 Tuesday in the 45th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game. The Augusta Greenjackets outfielder was the only Southern Division player with two hits in the game, adding a run scored and a stolen base to earn MVP honors. The Southern Division has now won two straight SAL All-Star Games and six of the last seven contests. Capital City's Greg Ramirez pitched two scoreless innings of relief and was credited with the victory. Charleston South Carolina's Chad Orvella set down the side in order in the ninth to earn the save in front of the hometown fans. The Northern Division tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a two out rally. Lake County's Kevin Kouzmanoff launched a solo homer over the scoreboard in left. Lexington's Beau Hearod followed with a single and scored on Charelston West Virginia's David Smith's RBI double to left-center. An error by Hickroy shortstop Javier Guzman opened the door for the South in the bottom of the fifth. After reaching on the miscue, Milons stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher, one of four errors committed by the Northern Division club. With one out, Moss hit a flair into shallow center field that fell to give the South a 3-2 advantage. The Southern Division club added a run with a two-out rally of their own in the sixth inning. Rome's Miguel Bernard singled and stole second. Asheville's Jordan Czarniecki then lined an RBI base hit to right field to increase the lead to 4-2. Guzman had the only multiple-hit game for the Northern Division. The two teams combined for 11 hits in the game against 13 pitchers, six from the North and seven from the South.
FISHERS CATS STREAK AT SIX
Michael Snyder slammed a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, capping off a six-run frame to lead the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 10-5 comeback win over the New Britain Rock Cats. Tyrell Godwin started the eighth inning rally when he scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at five. Jose Umbria would follow with a sacrifice bunt plating Aaron Hill to give the Fisher Cats a lead they would not lose. Dominic Rich would knock in a run with a single before Snyder's big blast. Godwin had a home run, two RBI and three runs scored in the win. Rich added a solo shot to his RBI single and scored a pair of runs for New Hampshire, who improved to 44-33 and trail Binghamton by just 1/2 game in the Northern Division. Andy Torres (2-0) picked up the win, tossing two innings of relief. He allowed just two hits and struck out three. Jon Pridie (3-5) suffered the loss. He allowed three runs on one hit and two walks in 1/3rd of an inning. Garrett Jones had a three run home run for the Rock Cats, who fell to 35-42.
BERGERON TO THE RESCUE
Peter Bergeron blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Indianapolis Indians edged the Buffalo Bisons, 3-2, in an International League game Tuesday night. With the win, Indianapolis improved to 37-39 while Buffalo fell to 42-36. Buffalo scored the go-ahead run on a solo home run by Russell Branyan in the top of the 12th, but Indianapolis answered with Bergeron's two-run shot in the bottom of the frame. Matt Childers (3-2) gave up one run on one hit in three inning to earn the victory. Starter Ben Hendrickson, who did not factor in the decision, gave up five hits and struck out nine in nine innings. Losing pitcher Kane Davis (1-1) was touched for two runs on two hits in 1 2/3rd innings. He struck out four.
ETHERTON SCALPS BRAVES
Seth Etherton hurled a seven-inning complete- game shut out as the Louisville Bats blasted the Richmond Braves, 6-0, in the first game of an International League doubleheader Tuesday night. With its second straight victory, Louisville improved to 36-41, while Richmond, losers of two consecutive, fell to 39-36. Etherton surrendered four hits, walked one and struck out three in the victory. His ERA stands at 4.40. On offense, Louisville got a double, a home run and three RBI from Ray Olmedo and one RBI each from Felipe Lopez, Reggie Taylor and Kenny Kelly. Losing pitcher Dan Meyer gave up four runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked four.
HOLY SHEALY
Ryan Shealy went 5-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI as the Tulsa Drillers pounded the El Paso Diablos, 14-3. Shealy scored four runs and registered two doubles in the win. Three of Shealy's RBI came in the eighth inning on a three- run home run with the Drillers already leading 7-3. He added another three-run blast to put Tulsa up 13-3 in the ninth. Jayson Nix went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two runs scored in the win. Zach Parker recorded the win in six innings of work. Parker surrendered three earned runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out one to improve to 4-7. The Diablos' Clint Goocher was dealt the loss. In 4 2/3rd innings he allowed six runs -- four of them earned -- on seven hits and four walks. Goocher lost for the second time this year. Conor Jackson went 2-for-4 with an RBI for El Paso.
LONEY LEADS SUNS
James Loney's single in the bottom of the 11th inning propelled the Jacksonville Suns over the Carolina Mudcats, 4-3 in a Southern League contest. Loney's single came with two outs and plated Derek Michaelis with the winning run. Jacksonville's Willy Aybar led the Suns' attack as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and an RBI in the win. Loney finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Suns' Franquelis Osoria earned the win in relief. Starter Dimas Reina lasted 5 2/3rd innings where he allowed two earned runs on four hits and four walks. Reina earned the no decision as Osoria improved to 4-3. Carolina's Randy Messenger was saddled with the loss in 1 2/3rd innings. He yielded two hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out three. Messenger allowed the winning to run to cross the plate as he fell to 6-1. Josh Willingham went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in the loss.
MAJIC MAN
Val Majewski slapped an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the tenth inning, plating Gary Cates with the winning run, as the Bowie Baysox knocked off the Trenton Thunder, 10-9 in extra innings. Kris Wilken tied the game for Bowie in the bottom of the eighth inning, when he drove in Majewski with a run- scoring single. Trenton would threaten in the top of the ninth inning, but would strand runners on second and third when Mitch Jones struck out to end the inning. Rodney Ormond (1-0) picked up the win tossing 2/3rds of an inning, getting out both batters he faced. Michael Huggins drove in four runs for the Baysox. Eli Whiteside drove in a run and scored twice in the win, as Bowie improved to 39-38. Tim Adkins fell to 0-4 with the loss. He allowed a run on three hits without getting an out. Mitch Jones and Dave Parrish each homered and drove in two runs for Trenton, as the Thunder dropped to 37-38. Jones also scored three runs, and Parrish fell a triple shy of the cycle.
RED BARONS SCORE FIVE IN TENTH TO WIN
Mark Smith was hitless until the top of the 10th inning when he laced the game- winning RBI single for the Scranton/Wilkes- Barre Red Barons, which scored five runs in the extra frame to beat the Charlotte Knights, 8-3, in an International League game Tuesday night. With the win, Scranton improved to 48-29 while Charlotte fell to 38-41. With the score tied 3-3, Scranton plated five runs in the 10th inning with Smith poking an RBI single, Jorge Padilla lofting a sacrifice fly and AJ Hinch hammering a three-run home run. Jim Crowell (3-1) gave up one run and two hits in three innings of relief to earn the victory. Losing pitcher Mitch Wylie (1-4) was touched for five runs on three hits in one inning.
