New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Pittsburgh jumped to the top of the latest Associated Press poll released Monday, as North Carolina fell out of the No. 1 spot for the first time all season.
The Panthers (14-0) received 70 out of 72 first-place votes and 1,798 points after a strong week of basketball, in which they recorded two Big East road wins. Pitt beat Rutgers in Piscataway on New Year's Eve before dominating Georgetown, 70-54, in Washington on Saturday.
Pitt had been ranked third, but rose to the No. 1 position after both UNC and Connecticut, previously ranked first and second, respectively, suffered losses.
The Tar Heels (13-1) had dominated their early games and the early polls, winning all of their first 13 contests by double digits and holding the No. 1 spot unanimously.
That was until Sunday, when they dropped an 85-78 decision to Boston College in Chapel Hill. As a result, UNC -- which received the other two first-place votes -- dropped down to third in the poll.
Duke (12-1) rose three places to No. 2 after recording wins over Loyola- Maryland and Virginia Tech, while Wake Forest (13-0) remained undefeated and jumped two spots to fourth.
Connecticut (12-1) had occupied the second spot, but fell three places to No. 5 after losing to Georgetown, 74-63, on December 29 at home. In the No. 6 spot is Oklahoma, which fell two spots after losing at Arkansas last Tuesday.
Rounding out the top 10 are Texas, Michigan State, Georgetown -- which climbed two spots -- and UCLA. Syracuse, Clemson, Notre Dame, Purdue, Tennessee, Xavier, Boston College, Marquette, Villanova and Arizona State occupy Nos. 11-20.
No. 12 Clemson rose eight spots, while No. 17 Boston College had not been ranked prior to its win over UNC. Marquette is also new to the poll.
Butler rose four spots to No. 21, while Minnesota, Baylor, Louisville and West Virginia -- also not previously ranked -- round out the poll.
