Montreal, QC (My Sportsbook) - Andrei Markov tallied the lone shootout goal, and the
Montreal Canadiens topped the
Florida Panthers, 6-5, at Bell Centre. After the first five shooters were all stopped, the newly-named All-Star starter Markov slipped a backhand shot through the legs of Florida's Craig Anderson to give Montreal the win. Andrei Kostitsyn scored twice, while Francis Bouillon, Tom Kostopoulos and Robert Lang also tallied for the Canadiens, who have won four of their last five. Lang also recorded an assist, while Jaroslav Halak made 30 saves in the win. Radek Dvorak had two goals for the Panthers, who have lost five of six. Jassen Cullimore, David Booth and Brett McLean also scored in the loss, while Anderson allowed five goals on 45 shots in the loss.
Final Score: New Jersey 4, Ottawa 3 (OT)
Newark, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Brian Rolston's power-play goal 1:43 into overtime lifted the New Jersey Devils to a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators at Prudential Center. Dainius Zubrus scored twice, and Jamie Langenbrunner added a power-play marker for New Jersey, which has won two in a row and four of five overall. Scott Clemmensen turned aside 17 shots in the win. Brendan Bell, Chris Kelly and Nick Foligno each scored once for Ottawa, which fell to 1-4-1 on its season-long eight-game road trip. Alex Auld made 31 saves for the Senators in the loss.
Final Score: Tampa Bay 4, Atlanta 1
Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Martin St. Louis registered two goals, and the Tampa Bay Lightning climbed out of the Southeast Division cellar with a 4-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers. Mike Smith made 27 saves, as the Lightning moved one point ahead of the now-last place Thrashers. Steve Eminger and Ryan Malone also scored for Tampa Bay, which recorded its first win in Atlanta since February 22, 2007 and snapped a three-game losing streak. Erik Christensen scored the lone goal for the Thrashers, who have lost five of six. Kari Lehtonen allowed four goals on 35 shots in the loss.
Final Score: Chicago 5, Calgary 2
Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - Martin Havlat recorded a goal and an assist, and the Chicago Blackhawks returned to their winning ways with a 5-2 rout of the Calgary Flames. Playing without star forward Patrick Kane because of a high ankle sprain suffered in the Winter Classic game against Detroit, the Blackhawks managed to end their brief two-game slide. Andrew Ladd and Patrick Sharp also recorded a goal and an assist, while Kris Versteeg and Dustin Byfuglien also tallied for Chicago, which has now won 10 of 12 overall. Nikolai Khabibulin made 34 saves in the win for the Blackhawks. Todd Bertuzzi and Daymond Langkow scored for the Flames, who came into the game riding a five-game winning streak. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed four goals on 28 shots before being pulled after the second period in taking the loss, only Calgary's third in its last 10 road games.
Final Score: Minnesota 2, Colorado 0
Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Owen Nolan tallied the only two goals of the game, and the Minnesota Wild blanked the Colorado Avalanche, 2-0, at Pepsi Center. Niklas Backstrom made 32 saves for his fourth shutout of the season for Minnesota, which has won two of three and snapped a six-game road losing streak. Tyler Arnason had a team-high five shots for the Avalanche, who have lost three straight on the heels of a three-game win streak. Peter Budaj stopped 35-of-37 shots in the loss.
Final Score: Anaheim 2, Phoenix 0
Anaheim, CA (My Sportsbook) - Jonas Hiller stopped all 29 Phoenix shots to notch his third career shutout, and the Anaheim Ducks topped the Coyotes, 2-0, at Honda Center. Chris Pronger and Bobby Ryan got the goals for Anaheim, both on the power play -- and both their seventh of the season -- as the Ducks won for just the second time in their last seven games. They did so without the services of the club's second leading scorer in Corey Perry, who was suspended by the league for four games following an elbowing incident in a loss to Philadelphia on Friday. Scott Niedermayer got the primary assist on both tallies while Ryan also added an assist in the win. It was also the third shutout of the 2008-09 campaign for Hiller, who bested former Ducks' goaltender and current Coyotes' netminder Ilya Bryzgalov. Bryzgalov stopped 32-of-34 shots but took the hard-luck loss against his former mates.
Final Score: Dallas 3, Vancouver 2 (SO)
Vancouver, BC (My Sportsbook) - Stars winger James Neal continued an impressive rookie campaign by netting the game-winning shootout goal in what was otherwise a goaltending clinic, as Dallas got by Vancouver, 3-2, at General Motors Place. Neal set up Mike Modano's 13th goal of the season late in the first while Modano assisted on Mike Ribeiro's second-period goal that eventually forced overtime for the Stars, who won for the second time in their last three in getting to 1-1 on a four-game road trip. Marty Turco was superb in stopping 33-of-35 shots, including an 11-save third period. Kyle Wellwood and Darcy Hordichuk scored first-period goals for Vancouver, which fell in the shootout for a second straight game. Jason LaBarbera was stunning between the pipes in his third straight start since joining the team, making 34 saves in defeat. A six-save overtime performance was preceded by a third stanza in which the netminder made several dazzling saves to keep a pressing Dallas squad at bay. With No. 1 netminder Roberto Luongo already out with a strained groin, the Vancouver goaltending situation got desperate last Tuesday when Curtis Sanford aggravated a groin ailment of his own. The Canucks were taking on the Flyers and during the game it acquired LaBarbera from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2009 seventh- round draft choice.
