Vancouver, BC (My Sportsbook) - Stars winger James Neal continued an impressive rookie campaign by netting the game-winning shootout goal in what was otherwise a goaltending clinic, as Dallas got by Vancouver, 3-2, at General Motors Place.
Neal set up Mike Modano's 13th goal of the season late in the first while Modano assisted on Mike Ribeiro's second-period goal that eventually forced overtime for the Stars, who won for the second time in their last three in getting to 1-1 on a four-game road trip. Scheduled visits to Detroit and then Phoenix await.
Marty Turco was superb in stopping 33-of-35 shots, including an 11-save third period.
Kyle Wellwood and Darcy Hordichuk scored first-period goals for Vancouver, which fell in the shootout for a second straight game.
Jason LaBarbera was stunning between the pipes in his third straight start since joining the team, making 34 saves in defeat. A six-save overtime performance was preceded by a third stanza in which the netminder made several dazzling saves to keep a pressing Dallas squad at bay.
With No. 1 netminder Roberto Luongo already out with a strained groin, the Vancouver goaltending situation got desperate last Tuesday when Curtis Sanford aggravated a groin ailment of his own. The Canucks were taking on the Flyers and during the game it acquired LaBarbera from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2009 seventh-round draft choice.
After Turco and LaBarbera stopped each team's initial skater in the shootout, Wellwood was the first to score, waiting till the last second before sending a wrister past Turco, glove-side. Dallas' Loui Eriksson then went to the forehand but put on the brakes at the crest of the goal-mouth and directed the puck in with one arm on the backhand. An aggressive Turco came out and poke- checked Alex Edler, and Ribeiro faked forehand twice before running out of room on his attempt.
Ryan Kesler then froze Turco with an awkward leg kick on his approach and scored with a wrister, but Modano ripped a forehand shot that trickled its way through LaBarbera. Turco used the length of his body to block the net on Alex Burrows' shot along the ice, leaving Neal a chance to put it away as he simply beat LaBarbera with a low wrister to the stick-side for the win.
Wellwood got things started and was rewarded for crashing the net as Steve Bernier threw the puck in front off the right boards for a tip-in at 2:11 of the first.
Hard work in the corners resulted in a 2-0 Vancouver advantage later in the frame. Jason Jaffray and Alexandre Bolduc pursued the puck into the right corner with the former emerging with the disc and sending it in front to a streaking Hordichuk for the redirection.
Dallas got one back in the waning moments of the period as Neal skated up the right side into the zone alongside Modano and feathered a pass through the low slot to the future Hall-of-Famer, who scored with a defender draped on his back.
Ribeiro's power-play tally at 13:51 of the second knotted the game at two. Jere Lehtinen skated off the boards across the left circle before sending a cross-ice pass to Ribeiro for a one-timer.
LaBarbera robbed Ribeiro midway through the third on a put-back attempt in front. After sprawling out to make the initial save, he threw out the glove with Ribeiro staring at an empty net and snagged the disc. A second swat at LaBarbera's glove proved unsuccessful as well with the netminder showing great agility in keeping his mitt from crossing the goal-line. Not to be out-done, Turco made a sliding stop moments later on a bang-bang play in front to force the extra session.
