(My Sportsbook) - The
Calgary Flames will bring to a close what has so far been a very successful homestand, as they welcome the
Edmonton Oilers tonight to Pengrowth Saddledome.
The Flames have notched at least a point in each of the first four contests of this five-game residency. After an overtime loss to Chicago on December 19, Calgary has ripped off three straight wins, including Monday's 2-1 victory over Minnesota.
Eric Nystrom had the game-winner with an early third-period tally. The son of four-game Stanley Cup winner and New York Islanders great Bob Nystrom, it was the 25-year-old's first goal since November 1, a span of 25 games.
Daymond Langkow provided the other tally for the Flames, who have also won five of their last six games. Langkow has three goals and three assists over his last six games.
Miikka Kiprusoff won by making 23 stops to help improve the Flames to 12-4-3 as the host team this season.
Calgary, which leads the Northwest Division by three points over the Vancouver Canucks, has been on a roll despite Jarome Iginla's scoring struggles. Iginla leads the Flames with 16 goals, 24 assists and 40 points, but hasn't lit the lamp in five straight games and has just two goals over his last nine games. He does have six assists in that span, though.
Iginla has 21 goals and 34 assists in 66 career games versus the Oilers.
Edmonton, meanwhile, fell one win shy of matching their season-high four-game winning streak set at the beginning of the season. After victories over Phoenix, Vancouver and Nashville, the Oilers were bested by the Ottawa Senators, 3-2, on Tuesday night.
Liam Reddox and Ethan Moreau scored for the Oilers, while Mathieu Garon allowed three goals on 25 shots. Shawn Horcoff ended with two assists and Dustin Penner tallied one helper.
In addition to Marc Pouliot leaving last night's game in the second period due to a mild concussion, the Oilers skated last night without leading scorer Ales Hemsky. Hemsky suffered a nose injury after taking a big hit versus the Predators on Sunday and could miss tonight's game as well. He leads the Oilers with 25 assists and 35 points.
The Oilers have won three of their last four on the road and are 11-9-0 as the visiting club this season. They will open 2009 with a five-game homestand.
Edmonton has won the first two of six matchups with Calgary this year, notching both a home and a road win so far. The Oilers have won five of the last seven in the series as well as two straight and four of the last six at Pengrowth Saddledome.
