Chapel Hill, NC (My Sportsbook) - Tyler Hansbrough scored 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to pace top-ranked North Carolina to a 97-75 win over Rutgers.
Ty Lawson had 19 points and Danny Green contributed 18 points for the Tar Heels (12-0), who have won all of their games this season by double digits, extending a school record.
"I think the last couple games, we didn't come out and play our best," said Green. "Today we wanted to come out and give more energy because we don't have too many consecutive games where we turn the ball over, make simple mistakes and not pushing as much as we normally do. I think tonight we did a better job, especially offensively."
Mike Rosario had 26 points to lead Rutgers (9-4), which had a four-game winning streak broken. Corey Chandler had 14 points, Anthony Farmer 12 and JR Inman 11 in defeat.
"In order to be the best you have to beat the best," said Rutgers coach Fred Hill. "This is no disrespect to the ACC, but we believe we play in the best conference top to bottom. Some people think I am crazy, but I wanted to play North Carolina. I talked to coach (Roy) Williams about the series. You have got to learn to throw your best shot out there. We took some of their punches and kept coming back. We want to be the best in our conference so games like these are good for us."
Already ahead 52-38 at the half, the Tar Heels expanded on their advantage in the first five minutes. Hansbrough's jam made it a 65-46 margin with under 15 minutes remaining. UNC stayed comfortably in front the rest of the night.
Hansbrough accounted for the game's first five points, but Chandler's three- ball had the Scarlet Knights within 13-12.
A layup from Green extended the difference to 32-21 at the halfway point, but Rutgers rallied for the next seven points. Later in the half, UNC ran off nine consecutive points.
