(My Sportsbook) - A pair of red-hot Eastern Conference foes will meet tonight in Newark as the
New Jersey Devils welcome the
Boston Bruins for a showdown at the Prudential Center.
The Bruins have been the best team in the East this year as they lead the conference and the Northeast Division with 52 points. Boston has won its last five games and 10 of its last 11 outings overall.
New Jersey, meanwhile, has won three straight contests and is 7-1-1 so far in December. The Devils are currently third in the Atlantic Division with 41 points.
Boston began a five-game road trip on Sunday when it earned a decisive victory in St. Louis. The Bruins are 11-4-3 as the visiting team this year and have won four of their last five road tests.
Rookie Blake Wheeler scored twice as the Bruins doubled up the Blues, 6-3, at the Scottrade Center.
Michael Ryder posted a goal and an assist and David Krejci collected three helpers for the Bruins, who improved to 19-2-1 in their last 22 games.
Phil Kessel recorded two assists to extend his points streak to an NHL-best 18 games. The fifth overall pick in the 2006 draft, Kessel has 14 goals and 14 assists during his amazing run, which is the longest such streak by a Bruin since Adam Oates recorded points in 20 straight games from January 7 through February 20, 1997.
Manny Fernandez made 29 saves to earn his 11th win of the season.
On the injury front, Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron is sidelined indefinitely with a concussion suffered Thursday against Carolina, Bergeron, who missed all but 10 games last year with a concussion, has four goals and 14 assists in 31 games this season.
The Devils also earned their latest victory on Sunday, as they edged the rival Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2, in Newark. Travis Zajac scored the winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout to give the Devils the extra point against its Atlantic Division foe.
Patrik Elias and Brian Rolston scored in regulation for New Jersey, while Scott Clemmensen made 27 saves in the victory.
Elias extended his point streak to 10 games and has eight goals and nine assists during the run. It's the second-longest current stretch in the NHL next to Kessel's tear.
Tonight's test marks the third segment of a four-game homestand for the Devils, who are 11-5-1 as the host this year. Jersey, which will complete the residency Friday night against Pittsburgh, has won seven of its last eight at the Rock.
This evening's test marks the first of four between Boston and the Devils this year. Jersey has taken four of five and nine of the last 12 in the series and the Bruins have dropped three straight and five of six in the Garden State.
