Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - Drew Brees threw two touchdown passes as the
New Orleans Saints crushed Detroit, 42-7, and kept the Lions on their march toward infamy.
The Lions (0-15) became the first team to ever start a season with 15 straight losses and are staring a winless season in the face.
Detroit now has one chance left, next Sunday in Green Bay, to avoid becoming the first team to finish a full season without a win since the league went to a 16-game format in 1978.
The 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers went 0-14 in their expansion season, while several teams have gone 1-15 since the implementation of the 16-game ledger.
"We are a team, but everyone has to take ownership for what they do and we've got to play," said Detroit linebacker Paris Lenon. "We've got to play. We've got to come out here and we've got to play better. You just can't play like that and expect to have a favorable outcome against any team in the National Football League."
Brees went 30-for-40 with 351 yards while Marques Colston had nine catches for 99 yards and two scores for the Saints (8-7), who have won two of three but have already been knocked out of playoff contention.
"I was pleased with out effort today," said New Orleans coach Sean Payton. "I thought we did a good job in all three phases of the game and we were very effective on third downs both offensively and defensively."
Brees has 4,683 passing yards on the season and needs a 401-yard game next week to tie Dan Marino's single-season record set in 1984.
Kevin Smith had 24 carries for 111 yards and a score while Dan Orlovsky went 10-for-23 with 125 yards and two interceptions for Detroit, which has lost 16 straight overall going back to last season.
"What I saw, we were outplayed in every area of the game; kicking, offense, defense," said Detroit coach Rod Marinelli. "Our defense never gave us a chance to get in the game, not at all. We couldn't get them stopped on third down. If you can't do that, you can't win. The penalties hurt us early in the game and that's really the story."
New Orleans needed little time to take the lead. Skyler Green returned the opening kickoff 60 yards to the Detroit 41. Five plays later, Robert Meachem took a handoff on an end around and raced into the end zone from the right side from a 20-yard score.
Detroit was driving on its ensuing possession and appeared to tie the game as Calvin Johnson was wide open on a deep bomb to the left side and caught the pass for a 43-yard score, but Gosder Cherilus was called for illegal procedure to nullify the touchdown. On the next play, Orlovsky was picked off by Jason David.
The Saints took advantage of the turnover on a 17-play march that ate up 8:23 of the clock and punched the ball into the end zone on a two-yard touchdown run by Deuce McAllister for a 14-0 advantage with 1:07 left in the first.
Detroit answered with a march into the end zone. The 12-play drive that began at the Detroit 15 appeared to have stalled as the team faced a 4th-and-goal at the three-yard line. On the fourth down play, Orlovsky's pass to Michael Gaines fell incomplete, but Roman Harper was called for pass interference and on the next play, Smith took it into the end zone to make it a 14-7 contest with 9:46 left in the first half.
New Orleans, though, scored on its next two possessions to take a 28-7 lead into the locker room.
On 3rd-and-2, Pierre Thomas took the ball around the right tackle for 29 yards to get the ball to the Detroit 26. Five plays later on 2nd-and-goal at the one-yard line, Mike Bell took the ball into the end zone with 4:39 to play.
After holding Detroit to a three-and-out, the Saints struck quickly as Brees connected with Devery Henderson on a 32-yard reception and Thomas took the ball into the end zone two plays later on a two-yard score with just 47 seconds left on the clock.
Detroit started the second half with the ball and was moving, but the drive stalled and the team punted.
New Orleans needed just three plays to get into the end zone as Brees found Henderson wide open for a 64-yard play and Colston took the ball into the end zone on the next play with a six-yard catch for a 35-7 lead.
The Lions were again forced to punt and New Orleans again used the long ball to get into scoring position as Brees and Colston hooked up for a 30-yard play. Four snaps later, Brees threw a fade to Colston at the left side on a three-yard score and a 42-7 lead with 3:04 left in the third.
