Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - Jason Blake netted the game-winning shootout goal in style and Vesa Toskala had 25 regulation saves along with three shootout stops as the
Toronto Maple Leafs bested the
New Jersey Devils, 3-2, at Air Canada Centre.
After Toskala kept Toronto in the game with a series of key stops late in the third and throughout overtime, Scott Clemmensen closed the pads on Lee Stempniak to start the shootout. Toskala then stuck with Zach Parise on a winding approach finishing with a backhander. Clemmensen again closed off the five-hole on Tomas Kaberle and Patrik Elias had a wrist shot foiled by Toskala.
Jeremy Williams snapped one top shelf over the glove of Clemmensen, giving Toronto the advantage but Jamie Langenbrunner came back and lifted one past Toskala.
Blake had a chance to win it and came in on an angle, putting the brakes on in front of Clemmensen, who had drifted over to his right anticipating the shot. Blake pulled off a spin move, and the successful pirouette score lifted the Leafs to victory after Brian Rolston shot wide.
"It's something I do behind closed doors when no one's watching," Blake said jokingly of his flashy score. "Shootouts are tough -- it's just you and the goalie. You've got to make a move or a deke. I haven't had much luck in shootouts so I figured what the heck -- I'll try the spin move."
Nik Antropov and Williams both scored in regulation while Kaberle notched two assists for Toronto, which achieved its longest winning streak of the season with its third consecutive victory. The Maple Leafs last won three straight March 18-22 of last season.
Toronto improved to just 6-5-4 as the host this year, but has now won three of its last four games on home ice. The Maple Leafs will embark on a three-game road trip which begins on Thursday in Boston.
Mike Rupp and Parise lit the lamp for New Jersey, which had a four-game winning streak halted Saturday and lost for the second time in as many games.
Clemmensen, who is now 8-4-0 as the primary replacement for the injured Martin Brodeur, stopped 25-of-27 regulation shots.
"Our problem was the turnovers in the neutral zone. They have a very good transition game," Parise said.
The Devils got things going in the first and broke out of their own zone on a 2-on-1 after the puck got by a Leafs defender. John Madden bided his time before sending a pass over to Colin White for a quick shot and a big save by Toskala. A back-tracking Toronto defenseman, though, threw a clearing attempt into the slot and right to Rupp, who buried it in the back of the net 1:49 in.
Toronto evened the score 7:24 into the second. Antropov collected a rebound in front off a Kaberle shot from the left point and fired it past a prone Clemmensen, who had gone down to block the initial shot.
Williams then gave Toronto the lead with 4:54 left in the second. He skated from the left boards into the slot and snapped a wrist shot over the glove of Clemmensen.
New Jersey, though, tied things up inside the final minute on the power play. Parise received a pass down low from Elias to Toskala's left and tried to stuff it past the goaltender. The puck flipped up in the air and deflected off Parise's visor and over the left shoulder of Toskala.
The teams were scoreless in the third. Toskala stoned Parise on a partial breakaway with 22.5 seconds left in regulation, sending the contest to overtime.
Toskala made several key stops in the extra session as well, including a breakaway chance on Travis Zajac as the clock wound under five seconds to play.
