Flyers, Hurricanes wrap season series in Philadelphia

(My Sportsbook) - The Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers will complete their season series tonight, as they meet for the fourth time in just over two weeks with a battle at the Wachovia Center.

The Flyers won the first meeting of the season on November 26, posting a 3-1 decision at the RBC Center in Raleigh. The next two encounters were decided in overtime, as the Hurricanes beat Philly on the road on November 28 before the Flyers won again last Saturday in Carolina.

Philadelphia has taken six of eight and seven of the last 10 meetings between the clubs, but the Hurricanes have come out on top in their last two trips to the City of Brotherly Love.

The Flyers followed up Saturday's win in Carolina by defeating the visiting New York Islanders on Tuesday night. Simon Gagne's power-play goal late in the third period lifted Philadelphia over the Isles, 4-3, at the Wachovia Center.

Jeff Carter and Arron Asham also lit the lamp for the Flyers, who have won three of four games to begin December and are now tied with Pittsburgh for second place in the Atlantic Division. Philly and the Pens each have 34 points and trail the New York Rangers by six points for the division lead. New Jersey is fourth in the division with 32 points.

Darroll Powe also registered his first NHL tally, and Mike Richards picked up two assists.

Carter's marker was his 20th of the season and leaves him two behind Buffalo's Thomas Vanek for the league lead in goals. Meanwhile, Richards extended his point streak to five games and has five tallies and three assists during the run.

Martin Biron stopped 24 shots to record his ninth straight win over the Islanders.

The Flyers played their fourth straight game without defenseman Matt Carle, who is sidelined indefinitely with a rib injury.

Tonight's outing marks the second portion of a four-game homestand for the Flyers, who are 7-4-3 as the host this year and have won five of their last seven at the Wachovia Center. Philly will next welcome the rival Pittsburgh Penguins for an Atlantic Division battle on Saturday afternoon.

Carolina recently ended a three-game losing streak with Sunday's 3-1 home victory over rival Washington. Ray Whitney scored twice to lead the Hurricanes to the win over the Capitals, who are first in the Southeast Division and six points ahead of Carolina.

Eric Staal scored the game-winning goal, while Michael Leighton stopped 38 shots for the Hurricanes.

Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice got his first win in his second stint with Carolina as he had lost his first two games after taking over for the fired Peter Laviolette.

Carolina is 6-4-2 as the visiting club this year and will also visit the New York Rangers on Saturday to wrap a two-game road trip.
