(My Sportsbook) - The
Minnesota Timberwolves will have a new face running the bench tonight when they wrap up a quick two-game homestand Tuesday versus the Utah Jazz at the Target Center.
Minnesota, which has lost five in a row, fired head coach Randy Wittman on Monday after a brutal 4-15 start to the season. Wittman had been the Wolves' coach since January 23, 2007 when he took over on an interim basis from Dwane Casey. Wittman posted a record of just 38-105 with Minnesota. Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale stepped down from his front office position to take over on the bench.
McHale has been in this position before and went 19-12 in the final 31 games of the 2004-05 season after firing head coach Flip Saunders
Minnesota suffered its fifth consecutive loss after Saturday's 107-84 setback to the Los Angeles Clippers in the opener of the residency, as Al Jefferson notched 28 points and eight rebounds in a losing cause.
Rookie Kevin Love chipped in 13 points and 15 rebounds in the loss, while Randy Foye ended with 13 points for the Timberwolves, who have lost four straight as the host and are 2-7 at the Target Center. In injury news for Minnesota, Mike Miller is questionable Tuesday with a sprained right ankle.
Utah, which features the dean on NBA coaches in Jerry Sloan, has alternated wins and losses over its last six games and suffered a 106-104 setback to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday in the opener of a short two-game road trip at US Airways Center.
Paul Millsap and C.J. Miles each dropped 20 points, while Millsap added 12 boards in defeat. Deron Williams chipped in 15 points and 15 assists and Mehmet Okur added 12 points and 13 boards for the Jazz.
While McHale takes over the Wolves, Sloan, the longest tenured active coach in all of major professional sports, will be celebrating his 20th anniversary as Jazz head coach tonight.
Sloan was promoted to head coach by Utah on December 9, 1988 when Frank Layden resigned. Since his hiring, there have been a total of 223 coaching changes (counting interim hires) in the NBA. Every other team has made at least two changes except for the Jazz. In addition five current NBA teams did not exist when Sloan took the helm in Utah, and two others were just over a month into their inaugural seasons.
The Jazz are 4-6 away from Salt Lake City this season. Leading scorer Carlos Boozer missed his 10th straight game because of a leg injury is listed as doubtful for tonight's contest.
Utah and Minnesota split four meetings a year ago, with each team winning on its own home floor. The Jazz have won two of three, five of seven and eight of the past 11 matchups in this series.
Minnesota has won two straight and three of four as the host against the Jazz.
