Montreal, QC (My Sportsbook) - Zach Parise netted the game-winner 31 seconds into overtime and the
New Jersey Devils captured a 2-1 win over the
Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
Alex Kovalev was called for tripping with 28 seconds left in the third, and the Devils set up the power play early in overtime. A shot from the high slot from Paul Martin was deflected out to Patrik Elias to the left of the net. Elias chose to fire a pass across the goalmouth instead of taking a high- percentage shot and Parise was able to score into a wide open net.
"I was expecting the pass," Parise said of the game-winning goal. "Last game we talked about that -- rather than going in tight -- to back off a little bit and feed the lane. It was a good win. Clemmensen made some good saves and kept us in the game. He gave us a chance to win tonight."
Scott Clemmensen stopped all but one of 26 shots to earn the win for New Jersey, which has won seven of its last eight games. Jamie Langenbrunner notched the other goal.
Saturday's test marked the end of a five-game road trip for the Devils, who finished 4-1-0 on the swing and improved to 7-4-1 as the visiting club this season.
"We weathered the storm a little bit. It's a testament to a good road game. We found our game and went from there," Clemmensen said.
Matt D'Agostini scored the lone goal while Carey Price made 29 saves in taking the loss for the Canadiens, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Montreal's winning streak coincided with the start of a franchise-record seven-game homestand on which they are now 3-1, while holding an 8-3-2 mark overall at home this season.
"I think nothing worked the way we wanted to tonight," Habs center Saku Koivu said. "We can score but -- now it's not going in. We can't get frustrated."
Price stopped all comers in the first period, making seven saves while D'Agostini got the Habs on the board with 4:25 remaining -- taking a feed from Andrei Markov and snapping a wrister past Clemmensen for the 1-0 lead after one.
Langenbrunner, though, tied the game at 1-1 with a slap shot from the right circle that just trickled through Price's legs 4:05 into the second.
It was Clemmensen this time that blanked the opposition, halting the Habs' nine second-period shots and the teams skated to a scoreless tie in the third -- with Price making 11 saves to Clemmensen's four.
