Orlando, FL (My Sportsbook) - Larry and Drew Nelson may not have played well individually, but they scored well as a team.
The Nelsons joined Tom and David Kite in the lead Saturday at the Del Webb Father-Son Challenge, both teams shooting 11-under-par 61s in the first round of this off-season Champions Tour event.
Greg and Greg Norman, Jr. combined for a 10-under 62 to move into third place, while Davis Love III and his son, Dru, fired a 29 on the back nine to earn a share of fourth place at nine-under 63.
Bernhard and Stefan Langer and Raymond and Raymond Floyd, Jr. -- with five Father-Son wins between them -- joined the Loves at 63. (Raymond Floyd also won the tournament twice with son Robert.)
Larry Nelson, who won the tournament last year with son Josh, is back this year with Drew, who helped his father claim the title in 2004.
Although they were rarely in synch Saturday, the sum of their parts turned out to be good enough for the Nelsons. Among their birdies was an approach by Drew to about three feet at No. 9.
"It seemed like we never played well on the same holes, so we were really able to help each other out there," Larry Nelson said. "Drew made a lot of nice putts, but we felt like we left some shots out there on the back nine, so we're looking forward to trying to get them back tomorrow."
The Kites, seeking their first win at the event, went seven-under on the back nine at ChampionsGate's International Course to join the Nelsons in the lead.
"I find myself being more of a spectator and cheerleader than a participant out there," Ton Kite said of playing with his son. "I would rather see him hit a good shot than hit one myself. That was one of David's best rounds today, he is really the reason that we played so well today."
Rounding out the field this year are Mark and Shaun O'Meara (64); Arnold Palmer and grandson Sam Saunders (64); Nick and Matthew Faldo (64); Hale and Steve Irwin (65); Vijay and Qass Singh (65); Curtis and David Strange (65); Fuzzy Zoeller and daughter Gretchen (66); Paul Azinger and Aaron Stewart, son of the late Payne Stewart (68); Craig and Chris Stadler (69); Jack and Jack Nicklaus II (69); Lee and Daniel Trevino (71); and Billy and Bob Casper (73).
