Daytona Beach, FL (My Sportsbook) - Mollie Fankhauser fired a six-under 66 to take the third-round lead Friday at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, while Michelle Wie fell two shots back.
Fankhauser stood at 12-under-par 204 for a one-stroke lead over Shiho Oyama (71) and a two-shot cushion on Wie (72) and Stacy Lewis (71).
Wie, following a 65 on Thursday that was her lowest round in more than three years, shared the overnight lead with Oyama but managed only an even-par score.
The biggest draw at LPGA International this week, Wie is declining interviews until after her final round.
Fankhauser, a 27-year-old who missed 15 cuts in 22 starts this past season, said she has just tried to carry over the momentum from her previous rounds. She had eight birdies on Friday, most of them on short putts.
"[I was] just really consistent. I just fired at pins, hit it really straight," said Fankhauser. "I can't complain. I just switched to new irons. I tried them just a few days before I left and thought I'd keep them in the bag."
Oyama, better-known in her native Japan, has remained at or near the top of the leaderboard since her opening-round 64.
"I am playing good golf right now," she said. "I just have to stay focused, and tomorrow is a new day for me. Today is over with, so tomorrow I have to just play my game of golf again."
Charlotte Mayorkas matched Fankhauser's 66 and moved into a share of fifth place with Amy Yang (70) at eight-under 208. Sophie Giquel (69) was alone in seventh at seven-under 209.
The tournament runs through the fifth round on Sunday, when the top 20 players on the leaderboard will earn LPGA Tour cards for next season. The field will be reduced to the low 70 players and ties by a 72-hole cut on Saturday.
Wie, 19, has never held an LPGA Tour card.
