Heatley leads the way as Sens drop Thrashers

Ottawa, ON (My Sportsbook) - Dany Heatley registered a goal and two assists, as the Ottawa Senators pounded the Atlanta Thrashers, 5-1, at Scotiabank Place.

Daniel Alfredsson and Brendan Bell both had a goal and an assist for the Senators, who have won three of their last four games after dropping six straight. Jason Spezza and Shean Donovan also tallied, while Filip Kuba collected two helpers.

Alex Auld, making his ninth straight start, made 22 saves for Ottawa.

Eric Boulton had the lone goal for the Thrashers, who have lost five straight and are 1-7-1 since a season-high five-game win streak. Ondrej Pavelec yielded five goals on 34 shots for Atlanta.

The dazzling trio of Heatley, Spezza and Alfredsson highlighted a dominant first period for the home squad, which outshot Atlanta, 19-8, and led 3-1.

It didn't take the Sens long to locate the back of the net. Heatley was left uncovered at the right side of the goal and he one-timed a cross-ice feed from Bell over a sliding Pavelec just 1:18 into the contest.

Atlanta quickly evened the score at 2:53 on Boulton's tally, but Ottawa regained the lead on the man advantage.

The crafty Heatley gathered an outlet pass from Kuba along the right boards and drifted into the attacking zone. The former Thrasher dangled the puck, deked and backhanded the disc into the slot for Spezza, who buried a shot past the Atlanta netminder at 6:12.

Alfredsson gave Ottawa a two-goal edge with 4:29 remaining in the frame. Heatley hustled down the left wing, outracing Thrashers backliner Garnet Exelby to a loose puck just inside Atlanta's zone, and chipped it ahead to Alfredsson, who slipped a shot under Pavelec's left pad.

"We came out good and had a lot of energy and fore checked well," said Ottawa coach Craig Hartsburg. "Our big line was really good, especially early. They had a lot of jump and obviously did a lot of good things offensively, but they worked hard outplaying whoever they were on the ice against and their skill took over."

The Sens killed off a pair of two-man advantages in the second period to preserve the lead. Bell then lit the lamp with 1:06 to play in the stanza, ripping a shot from the top of the right circle past Pavelec while on the power play.

"It was disappointing during the 5-on-3 when we get the goalie facing the other way and we don't score," said Thrashers coach John Anderson. "That changed the whole complexion of the game especially right after when we get a penalty and the puck bounces into our net. That's just the way things have been going for us of late."

Donovan added a marker in the final minutes of the third period.

Game Notes

Atlanta rookie forward Joey Crabb picked up his first NHL point with an assist on the goal by Boulton...Ottawa went 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Thrashers finished 0-for-6...A man was taken to Queensway-Carleton Hospital after he fell from the upper deck of Scotiabank Place during the second intermission. Ottawa President Roy Mlakar said it was the first such accident in the arena's 13-year history.
