Surging Flyers wrap home-and-home set with 'Canes

(My Sportsbook) - The surging Philadelphia Flyers will aim for a seventh straight victory when they host the Carolina Hurricanes in the finale of a home-and-home series this afternoon at the Wachovia Center.

The Flyers are in the midst of their first six-game winning streak since John Stevens took over as head coach early in the 2006-07 season. The last time the club won six in a row was from October 30 to November 12, 2005.

After a slow start to the season, the Flyers now find themselves tied with New Jersey for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Philadelphia earned a 3-1 decision over the Hurricanes in the opener of the home-and-home set Wednesday night in Raleigh. Simon Gagne picked up three points on two goals and an assist to lead the Flyers over Carolina, 3-1, at RBC Center.

Matt Carle scored the other goal for the Flyers, while Antero Niittymaki stopped 27 shots for his third win of the season and second in as many starts. Martin Biron, who has given up just seven total goals in winning his last four starts, is expected to be back between the pipes today.

Gagne extended his scoring streak to nine games with his three-point performance. He has five goals and 11 assists during the run, which is tied with Washington's Alex Ovechkin for the longest current streak in the NHL.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, were handed their third consecutive loss on Wednesday. The skid comes directly on the heels of a season-high three-game winning streak. Another loss to the Flyers today would give Carolina its longest skid since it also dropped four in a row from January 10-17 of last season.

Chad LaRose provided the lone tally for the Hurricanes in Wednesday's setback. Cam Ward took the loss despite allowing just two goals on 26 shots.

Prior to the game the Hurricanes activated defenseman Frantisek Kaberle from injured reserve, but he still missed Wednesday's game. Kaberle, who is questionable for tonight's contest, has sat out 19 straight games since suffering a broken leg on October 17 against Los Angeles.

The game in Raleigh marked the first of four meetings between the clubs in a span of just over two weeks. The 'Canes will host the Flyers again on December 6 before visiting Philadelphia on December 11 in the last regular-season matchup between the teams this season.

Philadelphia has won five of six, six of eight and seven of the last 10 encounters with the Hurricanes. Carolina has lost three of its previous five games in Philly.

The Flyers are 5-4-1 as the host this season and have won three straight in the City of Brotherly Love. Carolina is 5-4-2 as the visiting club and has a three-game road losing streak coming into today's test.
