Vancouver, BC (My Sportsbook) - Sami Salo's overtime tally lifted the
Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings hours after learning that starting goaltender Roberto Luongo would be sidelined indefinitely with a strained groin.
Luongo, who strained his groin in the first period of the team's victory over Pittsburgh last Saturday, was termed week-to-week.
"This is the first time I've had an injury like this," Luongo said. "I'll be working hard with the training staff and the medical guys, but I really don't know how long it's going to take."
Daniel Sedin and Taylor Pyatt scored in regulation for the Canucks, who have won four straight. Salo also recorded an assist on Pyatt's tally late in the third to tie the game, while Curtis Sanford, who is replacing Luongo in net, saved 32-of-34 shots in the win.
"It shows that we can battle through adversity," said Sanford. "We're dealing with it head on right now. We've got some key players out and we've had some key injuries in the last couple weeks. We're finding a way to get it done and guys are really stepping it up and playing hard."
Mikael Samuelsson and Pavel Datsyuk tallied for the Red Wings, who had a five- game winning streak snapped. Chris Osgood allowed three goals on 24 shots to take the loss.
"It's tough to make plays when they're really tight as a five-man unit," said Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg. "You try to get the puck out to the point and it's tough to get the puck through. They played a strong defense and still, I think we had enough chances for more than two goals and we couldn't pull it off tonight."
The Red Wings went ahead with 3:35 to play on the power play, as Datsyuk took a feed from Niklas Kromwell and put the puck past Sanford.
But the Canucks would answer 70 seconds later. Salo blasted a slapshot from the point, and Sedin was able to deflect it out of midair past Osgood for the tying goal.
In the extra session, Vancouver had a chance early, but a diving shot out in front clanked off the right post. But the Canucks got a power play opportunity after Johan Franzen went off for interference, and Salo blasted a slapshot past Osgood from the left circle after some good puck movement.
Detroit got on the board midway through the opening period. Samuelsson took a pass from Andreas Lilja as he streaked down the left side of the ice, and his backhand got by the short side of Sanford at 9:22.
The Canucks tied the game early in the second. Pyatt's wrist shot got through some traffic in front of the net and beat Osgood to the glove side at 2:27.
