Cincinnati, OH (My Sportsbook) - United States goalkeepers Nicole Barnhart and Briana Scurry combined to shutout Korea Republic on Wednesday, helping the U.S. post a 0-0 tie at Paul Brown Stadium.
The draw was just the third time this year in 33 matches the U.S. has failed to win. The top-ranked Americans, who won the Olympic Gold earlier this year, are 30-1-2 overall.
"We were happy that we were able to keep the ball out of the back of the net," said U.S. defender Heather Mitts, a Cincinnati native. "A tie obviously isn't a win, but it's better than a loss.
"I wish we could have gotten a win for the crowd tonight. All these fans came out on a school night and hopefully they had a great time, but we would have liked to get the win."
Forward Lindsay Tarpley had the United States' best scoring chance in the 31st minute, hitting a shot off the bottom of the crossbar that bounced close to the goal line before bouncing up and away from the net.
Barnhart, who started in place of usual No. 1 Hope Solo, made two big saves in the first half to deny South Korea's Kwon Hah Nul and Park Hee Young.
At the half, Scurry came on for Barnhart and eight minutes in proved her equal. On a free kick, Lee Jang Mi served a bending ball to the back post that Korean captain Kim Yoo Mi headed down to the near post, but Scurry reacted quickly and made a body save.
"I definitely think both [defenders] Kate Markgraf and Rachel Buehler played an excellent game and so did our goalkeepers," U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said. "We did well to keep the ball out of our net."
The United States concludes its three-game series with South Korea on Saturday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The U.S. also recently announced games on Dec. 13 and 17 against China in Carson, Calif., and Detroit, respectively.
