San Jose, CA (My Sportsbook) - Joe Pavelski and Mike Grier scored, and San Jose had a spectacular defensive performance in a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Evgeni Nabokov needed to make just 10 saves for the Sharks, who have won their last five games over the Penguins and are 7-0 with a tie in their last eight as the host versus Pittsburgh. They've won eight of their first 10 games this season and are off to their best start in franchise history.
Ruslan Fedotenko scored late in the third period for the Penguins, who have lost two in a row since a three-game winning streak. Danny Sabourin stopped 32 shots for the Penguins.
Grier scored with 7:08 remaining in the third period on a backhander from the slot for his first goal of the year, but the Penguins put pressure on the net late despite having just three shots in the last period.
Fedotenko deposited a loose puck from in front past Nabokov with 5:33 left, but he missed on a shot less than two minutes later.
The Penguins were then hit with a costly penalty as Matt Cooke got his stick up high on Brad Lukowich with 1:49 remaining. Pittsburgh pulled Sabourin and pressured the Sharks for a bit, but couldn't get a decent shot on net.
Pavelski scored midway through the first period shorthanded. With Rob Blake in the penalty box for tripping, Milan Michalek was sent on a breakaway, but his backhand attempt was stopped by Sabourin. Pavelski cleaned up the loose disc in the crease for the goal.
Sabourin made 19 saves in a scoreless second period, a stanza in which Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby sent a shot off the crossbar.
