Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - First, D.A. Points holed out from the fairway at 18 in regulation to force a playoff on Sunday, then he birdied it in the extra session to win the Miccosukee Championship.
At the par-four 18th at Miccosukee Golf & Country Club, Points and Matt Bettencourt met for the first playoff hole. Both found the fairway and both found the putting surface, although Points stuffed his approach to four feet.
Bettencourt had 12 feet for a birdie of his own. His putt slid by, then Points drained his birdie for his fourth Nationwide Tour victory.
The two shared the overnight lead and both posted rounds of four-under 67 on Sunday. Points and Bettencourt finished regulation tied at 12-under 272.
Points' play in the sudden-death playoff was solid, but the completion of this tournament in regulation made it great theater.
Points, at 10-under par, trailed Bettencourt by a single stroke when both played the par-four closing hole. Bettencourt found the rough, but hit a solid approach 20 feet short of the hole.
Points needed to hit one close and did. His sand-wedge dropped 10 feet shy of the flagstick. The ball took two hops, then rolled almost six feet right into the center of the cup.
The eagle vaulted Points into the lead at 12-under par. After everyone settled down, Bettencourt converted his birdie putt to match Points atop the leaderboard.
In the end, it was Points who got the trophy.
Bryce Molder (67), Josh Broadaway (68) and Gavin Coles (68) shared third place at 10-under 274.
Matt Hansen shot a four-under 67, which got him into a tie for sixth place with Scott Gardiner, who managed a two-under 69 in the final round. The pair finished at eight-under 276.
Chris Nallen rolled in a birdie at the last for a four-under 67. That tied him for eighth with Steve Wheatcroft (65) and Brendon Todd (67) at seven-under-par 277.
Nallen began the week 72nd on the tour money list and since this was the final full-field event before the Nationwide Tour Championship in two weeks, he needed a nice finish to get into that top 60.
Nallen's eighth-place tie was enough and he's in the field. Coles also was on the outside looking in, but played his way into the field with a chance at a PGA Tour card on the line.
