Phils try to push Rays to brink of elimination

(My Sportsbook) - The Philadelphia Phillies try to push the Tampa Bay Rays to the brink of elimination this evening when they play Game 4 of the World Series at Citizens Bank Park.

After a 91 rain delay on Saturday, Philadelphia grabbed control of this best- of-seven set, as Eric Bruntlett scored on Carlos Ruiz's slow dribbler in the ninth, giving the Phillies a wild 5-4 win.

J.P. Howell hit Bruntlett with a pitch leading off the frame. Bruntlett then went to second when Grant Balfour uncorked a wild pitch, and advanced to third when catcher Dioner Navarro's throw went into center field. Shane Victorino and pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs were intentionally walked before Ruiz hit a slow bouncer toward third, tight to the line. Evan Longoria charged and while falling down, sent an underhand scoop, but the ball sailed over Navarro's head.

Even with Ruiz's hit the Phillies just 2-for-33 with runners in scoring position this series, but despite that they are up 2-1 and two wins away from their first World Series title since 1980.

First pitch was officially at 10:06 p.m. (et), 1 1/2 hours after the original time, marking the latest start time in World Series history due to the lengthy rain delay. The teams played until 1:47 a.m. (et).

Ruiz, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard all homered for the Phillies, while J.C. Romero (1-0) threw 1 1/3 innings to get the win.

Jamie Moyer, who at 45 was the second-oldest pitcher to start a World Series game, allowed five hits and three runs and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings for the Phillies. He came into the game with an 0-2 record and a 13.50 ERA in two playoff appearances this year.

Howell (0-1) threw one inning and was tagged with the loss.

Gabe Gross drove in two runs for the Rays, while B.J. Upton had two hits, an RBI and tied a World Series record with three steals.

With four steals on Saturday, the Rays have 22 in the postseason, breaking the previous postseason mark of 20 held by the 1975 Cincinnati Reds and 1992 Atlanta Braves. Upton also became the first player to swipe three bases in a game since St. Louis' Lou Brock did it in 1968.

Matt Garza, MVP of the ALCS, allowed six hits and four runs, and had seven strikeouts through six innings for the Rays.

The Phillies turn to righty Joe Blanton this evening. Blanton has been solid for the Phils this postseason, going 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA. He started Game 4 against of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers and allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 7-5 win that night.

Blanton, who was 4-0 in 13 starts for the Phils after being acquired from Oakland, has struggled in his career against the Rays, going 2-3 with a 6.05 ERA in eight outings.

Tampa, meanwhile, will counter with righty Andy Sonnanstine, who is 2-0 this postseason with a 3.46 ERA. Sonnanstine had gone winless in his last seven starts of the regular season, but beat Chicago in Tampa's ALDS clincher and shut down Boston in his Game 4 ALCS start, surrendering four runs (three earned) and six hits in 7 1/3 frames.

Sonnanstine, who was 6-5 in 16 road starts this season, has never faced the Phillies.

As bad as Philadelphia has hit in certain situations, a couple of Tampa players have been even worse. Longoria, who had hit six homers in the previous two series, is 0-for-12 in the World Series, while Carlos Pena is hitless in 10 at- bats.

The Rays and the 1991 Atlanta Braves are the only teams to reach the World Series a year after finishing with the worst record in the majors.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, is back in the Fall Classic for the first time since 1993 and is trying to claim just its second World Series title since its inception way back in 1893.

There also hasn't been a title in any of the four major sports in the City of Brotherly Love since 1983, when the 76ers beat the Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA championship.

Game 5 of this series will be played on Monday at Citizens Bank Park.
