Hampton, GA (My Sportsbook) - Ryan Newman passed Ron Hornaday, Jr. on the final lap to win Saturday's E-Z Go 200 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in his first-ever Craftsman Truck Series start.
Newman, who drove the No.2 Chevrolet for Kevin Harvick Inc., joined Mike Skinner (1995), Robert Pressley (2002) and Kasey Kahne (2004) as those drivers to win in their truck debut.
"It was a great run and a great day for KHI," Newman said. "I didn't know really what to expect. I was pretty loose the whole race, but I saw (Hornaday) start slipping a couple of times."
For the second straight race, Hornaday put on a dominating performance, but gave up the lead in the closing laps. Hornaday led a total of 110 laps before Newman passed him for the first time with seven remaining.
Hornaday came storming back as he ran side-by-side with Newman before pulling slightly ahead with one lap to go. But Newman quickly moved around Hornaday heading into turn two and then held off the defending series champion at the finish line.
KHI scored a one-two finish at Atlanta as Harvick drives the No.33 Chevrolet for the team.
Hornaday's second-place finish coupled with a seventh-place run for Johnny Benson allowed Hornaday to move within 31 points of Benson in the championship standings with three races to go in the season.
"This is what it's all about, and that's what that truck is supposed to be running like," Hornaday said. "To lead that many laps was awesome."
Benson started on the pole, but third-starter Kyle Busch quickly dove below Benson and Hornaday, Jr. to grab the lead on the first lap. Benson fell to seventh, while Newman climbed from 10th to fourth within the first 10 laps.
Hornaday ran out in front for the first time on Lap 10 when he moved to the outside of Busch.
Donny Lia lost control of his truck and spun in the infield grass on Lap 15 for the first caution. Hornaday retained the lead when he was the quickest out of the pits.
Newman continued his charged up front as he passed Hornaday for the lead just before the second caution came on Lap 27. Hornaday was fastest again out of the pits and led the field for the restart three laps later.
By Lap 40, Busch passed Matt Crafton for the third spot and moved ahead of Newman to claim the second position, but ran three seconds behind Hornaday. Crafton, meanwhile, suffered engine trouble and took his No.88 Chevrolet behind the wall for repairs. He returned 44 laps later and finished 29th.
Brent Raymer also took a wild ride in the infield grass on Lap 58. Hornaday beat Benson out of the pits during the caution. Benson took fuel only and gained seven positions after his stop.
Busch moved past Benson to take back the second spot just after the race resumed on Lap 62. Benson's pit strategy, however, backfired as he fell back to 16th by Lap 77.
Debris on the track on Lap 88 put out the caution flag for the fourth time. Hornaday once again won the battle off of pit road with Newman right behind him, while Busch exited 10th after a mishap in his stall.
Hornaday continued to run out in front until Newman chased him down with less than 10 laps to go.
Denny Hamlin, Todd Bodine and Scott Speed were third through fifth, while Erik Darnell, Benson, Busch, TJ Bell and Brian Scott completed the top-10.
The next race is scheduled for Friday, October 31st, at the Texas Motor Speedway.
