Avs try to hand Edmonton second straight loss

(My Sportsbook) - The Edmonton Oilers will try to rebound from their first loss of the season, as they visit the Colorado Avalanche tonight at the Pepsi Center.

Edmonton opened up the season with four straight wins, its best start since beginning the 1985-86 season with five consecutive victories. However, the season-opening burst came to an end Wednesday night after a 3-0 setback to the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Oilers failed to get any of their 23 shots by Chicago netminder Nikolai Khabibulin and Edmonton managed just five shots in the final period. The loss came in the opener of a three-game road trip that concludes in Vancouver on Saturday.

Dwayne Roloson stopped 27-of-30 shots in the loss for Edmonton.

However, it was Mathieu Garon who was in net when the Oilers knocked off the Avalanche, 3-2, at home in the first meeting between the clubs back on October 12. Edmonton won that game on Dustin Penner's tip-in with 5.4 seconds left in regulation, while Garon stopped 31 shots.

The Avalanche won six of the eight meetings last year, including all four at home.

Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk both scored versus the Oilers, and Hejduk played a role in the Avalanche's 4-3 victory over Los Angeles on Monday. Hejduk and David Jones scored 75 seconds apart in the second period and Ryan Smyth added two goals in the win over the Kings.

The win was the third in a row for the Avs after beginning the season with three straight losses.

Hejduk has a goal in five of Colorado's six games this year, notching four tallies in his last three games. Paul Stastny added two assists on Monday and his six-game assist streak to start the season is a franchise record. Stastny's six-game point streak is the longest to start a season by a Colorado player since Sakic opened up the 1999-2000 season with points in eight straight games.

Peter Budaj made 26 saves to win for the first time this season for Colorado. Budaj, who has a 4.03 goals-against average, was in net for the Avs' first three games before giving way to Andrew Raycroft in the previous two contests. Raycroft allowed six goals total in winning his two starts.

Budaj stopped 16 shots in the loss to Edmonton earlier this season.
